View Full Version : In search of an Old Salt
riverrat2 02-07-2007, 08:21 PM I got assigned this Profile paper at school(URI) and I am supposed to interview someone of interest that is not a good friend or family member. I want to write it on someone that has fished the back a lot in the good old days and sold fish. I need specific interesting stories and such. I figured I would post this here to see if there was anyone in Southern RI that has been fishing the surf for many years and sold fish. This would be a huge help for me and probably only take 45mins at the most. Thanks
tattoobob 02-07-2007, 09:15 PM Ask Clammer
riverrat2 02-07-2007, 09:23 PM Ya I was thinking maybe clammer or Piemma. But any other suggestions are welcome.
tattoobob 02-07-2007, 09:25 PM Ya I forgot about Piemma, sorry Paul both are great sources.

Heh, he's old
riverrat2 02-08-2007, 09:26 AM I don't think he is old enough. Mike when did you start fishing the back?
Back Beach 02-08-2007, 09:36 AM I'm not an old salt by any means at 37. I was just very fortunate to be able to learn from a lot of high liners at a young age. I spent many summers selling fish while in high school and college.Mostly fished the back from 1985 through 2000, both surf and boat. Clammer or Piemma are the best authorities here.
Krispy 02-08-2007, 09:46 AM 37?! Really?? I thought you were like, 50 or something
RIROCKHOUND 02-08-2007, 09:50 AM I was going to say a day over 60 by the photos :D

Hi John
Canalman 02-08-2007, 06:14 PM Clammer!?
I don;t know if you could type hist stories and get away with it. Plus... how do you think the teacher will react to /////{{{[Clammer-ese]}}}}}/////LDLSL
Raven 02-08-2007, 06:34 PM i had a different color haze... blurple haze :bl:
Clammer 02-08-2007, 09:02 PM Dave
ya that,s what I was thinking ><><><<>
But there are some GREAT ones >>>>>>>>> if he posted after //I,d probably be in f #$%^&*()( jail again //
Paul,s gonna tell him about the red hot stripers days & the killings that were made
I {MAY} have told him about all the Other s#$%^& that was done // mostly illegal & alot of it doesn,t have any Stripers in it ;;
The F #$%^&*() kid would either get a [A} & have it published or get f #$%^&*() thrown out of URI >>>>>>>>> & that takes alot ><><><
riverrat2 02-08-2007, 10:09 PM I will definetly post the paper when done if it is ok with paul and anyone else I interview. Its for a writing class and not a fishing class so I have to try and make interesting to people that don't fish. My teacher may not understand the signfigance of a 1000lb night but they will understand the comradery(sp?) and rivalries that were involved with the commercial surf guys. I am hoping paul will give me some insight to these type of things, but regardless I am a surf fisherman so there will be some good fishing dialouge either way. I will keep you guys updated.
Back Beach 02-09-2007, 09:21 AM The commeraderies/rivals/freindships were what it was all about. There was never a place that attracted so many people from so many places. Montauk is mostly New Yorkers, Jersey is Jersey guys,CT is ct guys, so forth and so on. The cape was a collection of guys from all these places combined. Many rabid fishermen looking to cash in. Mix those guys all in with the locals from the cape, and it could be interesting.
riverrat2 02-09-2007, 10:11 AM Just got off the phone with Piemma. He had some amazing stories to tell and gave me just what I was looking for. Thanks a ton paul.

riverrat2 03-07-2007, 09:07 PM Alright guys I finished up on the profile of Piemma. I think he is out of town this week but I don't want to post it till he reads it and gives it the ok. It isnt what I would like to have done with the paper but due to the fact that it is for a college writing class and not my own personal surf fishing book I had to try and make it relevant to someone who knows absolutely nothing about fishing.
