As most of you know by now Im NEW to this plug stuff,I Don't have equiptment like most of you but do enjoy hand carving them,an painting them,an fishing them. my QUESTION is most of my PLUGS are 5" should I be putting BELLY HOOKS on them? is there a rule on lenth's of plugs an where hooks should be placed?

Rules no, guidelines, kinda.

Find the happy place where the hook can swing and not be so close to the nose it gets fouled on the leader and not so far back it tangles with the tail hook.

Bass generally hit the head of prey so you want the eye and belly hook to create a synergy of frequent hook ups

I make some freshwater stuff as small as 1 1/4 inch long. Those still have belly hooks. Size the hook to the plug. If I were to leave off a hook it would be the tail hook, unless I was making a plug specifically for bluefish.

saltydog- if anything your plugs should only have a belly hook- striped bass are head hunters, while bluefish are tail nippers

THANK YOU for the info, looks like Im putting BELLY HOOKS on them an a SINGLE w/ deerhair on the BACK. I like that TAIL look on the plugs. thanks again,

Another thing about belly hoks is that they tend to act as a rudder and help the plug track straight...
