Large black deceivers work at night, razzle-dazzles are also good. You don't really have to get very fancy, but tying imitations is fun, and certainly doesn't hurt.

Try to find instructions on the shady lady squid by Bob Popovics. Its a great squid fly. I thought it may be on the aswf.org web site but its not. Give stripersonline.com a search.
Basically, Bob puts a bunch of hackles on the end of the hook (or on a mono extension) a body of estaz, and some big webby hackles for the head. You can use marabou for the head also.
Great action, killer squid fly.

Mueller's right. Beautiful fly, relatively easy as far as some squid imitations go.

Thanks George. On the deceiver like George mentioned, you can splay the rear hackles to look like squid tentacles ( BobP uses a bump of material (estaz/ or chenille) similar to the way Kenny Abrahms uses it on his flys to get the material to expand) or use ostrich herl for a smaller fly. Build the body up with some sort of wrap (bills body braid, etc.) . Move the eyes toward the bend of the hook, and make the head with bushy bucktail, using the bottom part of the tail will make the hair flair out real nice, letting the material breathe in a rip. You can control the amount of flair by limiting/or increasing the tension on the fibers on the first couple of wraps. The attempt with the head material to get that illusion of the squid head that moves and has some translucency to it. A few dots wit a makrer to make it realistic.
Hope this helps.

The deer hair one is for waking on top at night and the other one is for day or night. They work very well in late May and throughout the summer.

Yes, I agree your squid is too good looking especially since where I fish I get more big aggressive blues on squid than stripers in May.
