View Full Version : Big Ripp offs ?
Saltheart 03-14-2007, 06:05 PM Name some big rip offs.
I have one. My mother wears false teeth. One tooth comes unglued. She has the tooth , takes it to the denture guy, He slaps some glue on and glues it back in place. We get the bill.....$175!!!! She didn't even get a new tooth , he glued the old one back in the empty slot. Moral of the story , ask how much first.
Anyway , I hope someday the guy chokes and dies (twice) on a plastic tooth.
Name some of your recent big rip offs.

Backbeach Jake 03-14-2007, 07:46 PM Without a doubt, I think that hearing aids tops the list. Talk about raping old people!! My wife's Aunt paid over a grand for something , essentially, that Cabela's sells for 2 bills.
taJon 03-15-2007, 06:43 AM liquid skin stitches at falmouth hospital.. 460 bucks for 5 minutes of work
isn't that just superglue? I think it is.
teaser 03-15-2007, 10:47 AM isn't that just superglue? I think it is.
Yes it is! They color it either blue, purple or pink so they can see where they are applying it, but it is most definately super glue.
SBASS1 03-15-2007, 10:51 AM $553 Ambulence ride Over the Gold Star Bridge (2 miles). $83 extra cause it was at night....
harritchate 03-15-2007, 03:54 PM the only difference with superglue is that superglue isnt sterile and it contains something that can be irritant to your skin.. ill go with old fashion stitches or go to the store to buy glue if it ever happens again!!!
Young Salt 03-15-2007, 04:01 PM i once went in for a $15 oil change.....they broke my hood release latch.........walked out about $200 poorer for a $40-60 part :af:
wader-dad 03-16-2007, 11:28 AM Cost to build a school. My town- oh yeah we need to rehab the junior high- $38 million. Need to put an addition on the high school -oh yeah thats aaahhh $58 million. Actually had an elementary school here that had electric heat and to convert it to oil heat was $12 million. I asked a builder why schools are so expensive and he said there are a lot of special building codes for schools. I just cannot figure it out. When I read the word rip off- this comes to mind.
vanstaal 03-16-2007, 11:50 AM i think the whole health care system is fuc*** for the old people
thanks Mr Bush !
baldwin 03-16-2007, 05:09 PM Lawyers...whoops! Sorry wader-dad! Actually, anything for fly-tying can be bought at a fraction of the cost somewhere else. Taxes: would be well worth it if spent to actually do what they're intended for.
afterhours 03-16-2007, 05:19 PM our entire health system....these doctors pass old people around to each other as if they were joints!
Swimmer 03-16-2007, 05:59 PM I have a buddy of mine who makes teeth. He has been taken care of my plate needs for years. He learn the trade from his father and he from his father. All the dentists send the chit to him. He does my whole plate when I need new ones for $100.00. Thats five teeth worth.
Ya and for those who thinks superglue works, it might but its only a temporary solution, superglue is water soluable. It takes awhile, but it is.
labrax 03-16-2007, 06:35 PM How about $525 for a glorified hockey mouth guard - went to the dentist and he told me I was grinding my molars and causing some issues. He cemented up the teeth, filled, etc. and then told me a mouthguard was necessary. I figured with the general markup it would be about $100, but no prices were discussed (mistake on my part). Takes a quick impression and off I go. I go back 2 weeks later - he tells me here it is - I say how much - he says $525 - I say no way don't want it - he tells me that I have to take it as it was a mold of my mouth. I am PO'd but like a chump I paid. Wife went to Wal Mart and picked one up that was similar for $15.
how about life in general?? i look back when you could buy a house for 30 grand, gas was under a buck a gallon.. workin folks used to be able to afford to take a big family vacation in the car and go cross country or something fun like that... now adays, people are so maxed that they jsut cant pay all thier bills.

My father bought his house in 1972 for 18K.
NOW I can't look at one within a 5 mile radius for less than 390,000
2 decker like he has?
500,000-750,000
My neighbor is selling his YARD;36'W x **'L for 199K
Too small to build on BUT it's still for sale.
My idea of a long vacation is FOUR days in NH instead of three.
ThomCat 03-21-2007, 05:41 AM A brake job at the local dealer where I bought my Baja. $450 per axle and the guy said it with a straight face!!! Brought it to my service guy. He did all 4 wheels, lifetime pads, an oil change and new wipers (not blades, the whole shootin' match) for less than $400. The dealers seem to think they have ya by the b____s!:af: :smash:

HighTide 03-22-2007, 12:12 PM Used to go to a dentist in Quincy, needed two root canals (+2 crowns) insurance was horrible so it cost me a fortune. Six mos later she says I need two more crowns. I got better ins so it wasn't so bad the the following year she wants to do two more crowns! WTF? why always two? She tells me because the teeth are next to one another. So my bullsh!t alarm finally goes off and I found another dentist.
"Do I need two crowns?"
"No. Your teeth are fine."
I have a new dentist.

That's all labor.
Lifetime pads....meaning the lifetime of the pads.
Warranteed until they wear out. Then you have to buy new ones.
All around brake job and an oil change?
I would have charged you a case of Sam Adams.
Plus parts. $200 tops.
I just don't do wipers.

I may be lucky, I drive a mid 90's gm car I got from an old lady with 9,000 miles for a very low price. I do all the brake work myself and I can generally do my front axle for example for about 60.00. That includes installing brand new rotors. Never had a problem. Done it twice now on that car. I've never heard of 450 per axle. That is definately a rip off. Gonna crawl under the car this weekend and replace muffler and middle pipe. Takes some work to cut out but will save about 200.00 + instead of going to one of those "places" that does that. I've found those auto parts stores are pretty good with the warranties. I have a muffler I have replaced about 4 times now with free ones and I have gotten free brake pads too. Got that care up to 200,000 with buying 1 muffler. There are some rip offs out there, but it pays to shop around.

:grins: :btu: Give me your number. Next time I'll not only hire you (although the wiper thing is a bit ??????) but, in the spirit of appreciation, also help you knock down the case of Sam's.
