View Full Version : What to look for in a Laptop
fishaholic18 03-19-2007, 07:17 AM What do you look for when buying a laptop?
I really need to upgrade my PC and am considering getting a laptop instead. There are just so many out there, it gets confusing. I want something that will last me a few years but will not break the bank.
fishsmith 03-19-2007, 07:39 AM From what I read in consumer reports, there is no real difference in reliablility, regardless of the maker.
I just got a Toshiba Satellite with 15.4" screen, (I can't rememer the exact model but it's the same one TheDadFisherman got, there is a post in here somewhere). The price was right $650 after all the rebates, and this thing is a racecar compared to what I had in the past.
THey all come with Vista as an OS now, try to get the HomePremium version, it does have a few more bells and whistles.
Good Luck.
BrianS 03-19-2007, 12:26 PM Make sure its a nice shiny MacBook pro with at least 2G of ram.
17" is nice but big, go for the 15"..
OSX is your friend.
and if you need windows.. use parallels or bootcamp...

Go online, build one up at the dell site. They even have their own financing plans. Make sure you get a DVD player at least. That way you can watch movies while sleeping aboard the boat at nite, or in a room when traveling.
TheSpecialist 03-20-2007, 09:14 PM I heard that Vista has built in blocking for downloads, in other words it blocks services like Kazaa, etc. I know Dell has a section with laptop that are returns, and sometimes you can score big.
The Dad Fisherman 03-21-2007, 12:09 PM The Toshiba has been good to us so far..very reasonably priced too.

fishaholic18 03-26-2007, 06:55 AM Ended up scoring one at BJ's wholesale club, it was the sample model and was in perfect cond, except for a small scratch in the outer cover. Got it for $500.

Saltheart 03-28-2007, 09:24 AM I got mine at the Dell outlet store. it was $400 and did everything i wanted it too. it was called refurbished which means it was sold to someone , they booted it and returned it. they also have scratch and dents that are even cheaper. you have to ride the site and have credit card ready to buy when the one you want pops up. the good deals last about 10 seconds so you must be there refreshing the screen and ready to jump on the machine when it is listed.
