How about if a fish finder was invented that could be mounted on a sand sled that would scan the water that is adjacent to the sled as it drives paralell to the water. Like a side scan radar, but it only scans 90 degrees to the right or left depending on which way your driving. Just because it isn't mounted on the bottom of a boat in the water should not matter should it?

Why couldn't the ping penetrate the surface of the water and reflect off of what the ping hit. Or would the surface of the water itself ping back to the fish finder.

The best thing about the fishing buddy is it gives a side view as well as a bottom view, The bottom view would be null in this case

You could stand there and not cast until a known object swims nearby or in your direction. A small screen could be attached to yourself in some manner and BINGO, make your cast.
