Had a great day on sunday when John R and I hooked up with FW and BC to go out on their boat.

We got into some fish up top between Nut I. and Peddock's first thing. I hooked up first and my knot failed... I don't know who did what after that, 'cause I had my early morning shakes as I tried to re-tie my leader, etc. I get a little hyper getting those first fish, tying knots is almost impossible. I think John boated a couple and FW dropped a couple.

Things broke up and the fish were sporadic so we cruised around Quincy Bay a bit and then over towards the airport. Several schools were up around the airport, Deer I. and Spectacle. It went on for a couple hours and we all had a bunch of hookups. BC was hitting them up top, John knocked down a couple double headers on poppers and teaser rigs. I was hitting fish on smoke/clear 6" jerkbaits... the other person in the boat was dropping fish left and right and found a couple bluefish that chomped "her" off (she redeemed herself later by catching most of the bait and nailing a bass on a sabiki rig).

We had fun catching a bunch of nice schoolies and BS'n about this and that. The fish showed pretty well after what I'd heard was a s-l-o-w couple weeks.

At one point, I displayed the pure fishing skill I possess, along with the devasting power of GS plastics. We found some fish along the light pier off the airport and I nailed two fish in a row. After the second fish, I went thru my usual "after fish" gear check... look for loops, check drag, whatever... as the lure dangled in the water, I hear a splash, then the rod is nearly out of my hands... only an extremely skilled professional with highly honed instincts could have hooked and landed such an agressive fish...

I'm just glad I still have my favorite outfit.

At slack tide, the action dropped off, so we headed into one of the rivers to jig up some bait. FW and John were the bait king and queen. BC and I stunk.
I got one small herring and BC got a couple, so at least we were allowed to fish.

FW nailed a herring that started peeling drag and after a few minutes, she brought up a nice "striped" herring on the spoon of her sabiki rig. Then some 19Mako guy shows up and chased the herring away.

Just kidding Tony, it was nice to meet you.

We headed outside with a couple dozen small herring. We ate and BS'd and drifted and my reel started singin' and I nailed a thick 34" bass that was alot of fun. It looked like I had a double header 'cause it had a buddy that followed it much of the way in, but not close enough to give him a bait.

Later we saw a large pogie being abused by a school bass that wasn't quite big enough to eat it. It went on for several minutes... it was like watching the discovery channel... it was cool.

We moved around a little since the tide and wind were not cooperating to give us a good drift. Anchored up one of the outer islands. Things were pretty slow, so we headed back inside to try some areas. We had some bluefish bite our small herring in half and a couple decent runs, but mostly we just enjoyed a fantastic afternoon out on the water.

Thanks again guys... and John, glad we all got some fishing time together. I look forward to doing it again.

Sounds like you guys had a good day. So there are pogies around?

Might want to get a lanyard for the rod just in case. I almost had a rod ripped out of my hands fishing with Gary Corsetti, and almost went over with a rod too.

Maybe one of those floats that I want to get for my daughter, the kind that wrap around the rod.

This was one of the smaller fish of the day... if it would have been like those good ones you guys caught, the rod would be gone. That was as close to a fish jumpin' in the boat as I've ever had.

On a side note:

John, my daughter and her friend apparently got into your box that was in the garage. They pilfered two "eels" for use in Britta's little swimming pool. Karen didn't know they weren't mine and let them use 'em.

The eels were 13" got stripers jerkbaits. From what my wife described, it could have been used as a commercial for ledgerunner baits as they were throwing them, swing them, playing tug-o-war and aside from a small set of teeth marks in one of them, they stood up well against two 4 year olds.

I'll return them the next time we get together.

I guess there are some pogies around... a few people know where to get them.

We kinda theorized that one of the guides FW&BC know well might have been live-lining them and one come unglued or got pulled off the hook... he was in the area at the time.

FW & BC, I also want to thank you guys for getting me and the soon to be father of twins out on the harbor... Had a a lot of fun and got to see my new favorite spammer on the water :D

It's been a little while since I've seen the Marshfield Armada merge with the regular Boston Fleet but it was interesting to see all the boats chasing fish in different directions and avoiding collisions. Fortunaelty, all the fishing types are in the water long before the "pleasure" boats churn up the harbor into one seriously confused wake.

We saw numerous guides early in the morning, about half fly, half spin chasing the topwater fish. With everyone glancing back and forth to see what the other is doing. Lots of Jone's Brothers boats out there :eek5: (actually, I like that boat, a modern heir to the old seacrafts?).

...only an extremely skilled professional with highly honed instincts could have hooked and landed such an agressive fish...

It was really funny because the fish came up & hit so quick, so close to the boat, we all were suprised he managed to keep his gear... Lesson to ya, if the rod ain't firmly in your hands, keep GS's plastics at least 3 feet above the water's surface....

S-M: Tell Britta she can keep the plastics and have fun :D

SM & JohnR, was glad to have you guys aboard the Alternative, we had a blast. Was great to finally get together and do some fishing like old times. We really enjoyed it!!!

Like SM said if he had been a little lax it would have been bye, bye rod & reel. It was too dam funny but he did hook up and land that little bugger.

JohnR was doing pretty good with a little secret popper we had him put on early, had a few doubles also and BC was doing good on top. But for the life of me I just couldn't get a fish to the boat, then I get chopped off as we approached a huge school of fish that not too many boats were on yet, well by the time I rerigged it was too late!!!

The only bass I got into the boat (NOT) was standing on a dock jiggin herring and hooked up on the sabiki rig. SM wouldn't let that one count because I wasn't in the boat. LMAO

But I think we need to give him a little instruction on jiggin bait, and talk about not being able to empty the bladder on the boat, yes he's one shy fellow. LOL

But we did have a great day, have known these to fellows for quite some time and they are the best. Hope to do it again soon guys, thanks for the great day!!!

GS we had a great day, some things are just better left unposted!!! Right guy's LMAO

The plastic was working great for SM yesterday, the fish were all over it, I was having one of those Pollack days if you get my drift.

GS, If you sell the boat and want to get out, you know you are more than welcome to hook up with us. Hang in there, hope everything comes around and you don;t have to sell the boat.

Don't worry FW, I think I've seen you catch enough fish to know you just had the hex goin'... not much more you can do when they come unglued from multiple trebles.

I had that stretch a few weeks ago where I lost 9 straight fish. It was nuts, I didn't think I was ever going to land one again. And last year during a huge bluefish blitz on the flats, I went thru a spell. I had caught dozens of blues and was going to bring one home to cook. I decided I had enough and my next fish would be my last and my dinner. I lost 7 or 8 blues in a row. Just using a hopkins w/ single hook. Took it as a sign and when I finally got one in, I let him go and called it a night.

And yes, I'm shy... especially when there's boats all over the place. I'll probably never be able to pee out of a boat again... never thought about it before, now you guys put this in my head. Thanks.

Yah, we compared the 6 1/2" jerkbait with the herring we had. Length and width are just about the same. That's probably why I've been doing so well on it... might have to experiment with some blue over pearl to try and match that color. GS, will be in touch.

Again, had a great time and had almost forgotten about John lecturing a certain guide about spamming S-B.com...

Just got the details of an order done for a guide on Chesapeake Bay and he's looking to match the Bass Assassin colors Opening Nights and Albino Shad. Looks to be close to what you might want, so I'll pour up some extra baits at the same time, as I usually do.

Glad to hear you all had a good time, by the time I got out there, it was mid afternoon, and the boat traffic was vicious. Also I had the gitrls with me and they don't like rough seas.

I would have taken a cruise to say hello, but i did not even want to try to negotiate through the gut at that time of the day.
We went into neponset river for a short cruise and over to marina bay for some ice cream.
Tried to tube/worm in some spots in quincy bay, but the girls are not into fishing too much, so after a short while we headed home.

Maybe I'll see you out there next time.

Went out today and did fairly well, came back early cause of the impending weather. I saw alternative at the ramp (no fishing today).
We got several keepers and shorts also. Tried to find live herring NADA. Ended up with some pollack and they worked fine, so did chunkin (my old reliable)....

SM,, I have a surefire method for releving oneself in such a situation. (later)
