I've read that some people remove the rear hook on these baits. I finally have a stick capable of lobbing these effectively and hope to toss them in the canal. Why would remove the rear hook?

i don't fish them but i've heard it gives more action to them by allowing more of the back end to move.

I find I gut hook a LOT of fish with the tandem hooks. I just make a little incision in the side of the bait and snip the wire. The other reason is that the back hook has been known to tear right off the wire resulting in a lost fish. If that wasn't enough, that back hook doesn't take much force before it straightens out.

Tsunami makes a 9" bait sporting a single 11/0 hook. It's the way to go, imo. Both the Tsunami and Storm hooks can cause heartbreak...

The canal god that gobbles up jigs loves big shad! I lost many last year and decided that the canal special with pork rind was just as effective and just as efficient.

I fish them quite a bit and started by using both hooks. I found that even bass about the size of the lure itself were INHALING them, making it very difficult to get a clean release and not injure the fish. Gut hooking is the pits with these things. Snip them off!!

Thanks, I was assuming the gut hut thing but wasn't 100% sure. As far as donating them to the canal, I shopped the sales (and mismarked prices) and was able to get some for $2, that is less than a bucktail so I figured it was worth it.

Watch the Kittery Trading Post Fishingfests-they had the 9" Storms for $1.99 ea and if you buy 3, you get a 4th free. I stocked up last Fall and they did it again this Spring.

The 9" shads don't work, stick to bucktails

I buzz the tail hook off with a dremel.

I've used the 9" Storm shads with the lip as well as the Tsunami's. I like 'em in fast moving channels.:kewl:
