This past weekend I went to the Cape (finally). I didn't quite do as well as I had hoped (but then again I hardly ever do ). Thursday and Friday the beach was just LOADED with baitfish! Both nights at sunset the Blues were out and about. I managed a 10lber! Hey, that's pretty impressive for me okay?? Hee, Hee...... During the commotion the hubby landed about a 10lb seagull! HA!HA! That just goes to show you our kind of luck!
Anyway, back to being serious...most of what we saw, heard, and experienced seemed to be all about blues. Did not notice anyone with any bass! If I only had a dollar for every Dab or Skate I caught though......

A ten pound blue can be one helluva fight and a lot of fun!!! As far as the bird?? I've caught a couple myself. You should have heard my drag going on my reel as that gull was trying to fly .... Did you hit spots other than the Race??

I heard it was very weedy out there.

Yes! It was one heck of a fight! I almost had to give the pole to the hubby! But it was at that point that I realized he had the seagull! so I kept at it! What a blast! Although for a moment I though it would surely take more than I did so I started to give it all I had! I certainly was a little tired out after that one. The adrenaline got going and I was shaking so bad he thought something was wrong with me!
There was some weed but I did not have a problem. I have seen it twenty times worse, so this did not bother me at all. We also tried hatches, Herring Cove, over the other side by Misssion Bell, and the warf for flounder...alll with no luck. Our "informant" told us to go to the wharf but we were unsure of exactly where to go... we did not get anything but we did see others doing well. I think we may have been a little bit illegal in where we were, so we did not stay long, oops.
We were thinking of going to Maine for our anniversary in Oct. but I think I will try to talk him into Truro again, We decided to sell tha camper because it is to small so we will only have the tent.... hopefully I can still talk him into it!
I wish I could sneak out this weekend again but it is my new niece's christening! And friends of ours want to go to the Big-E with us after. Damn social life!!!!!

My friends and I went seagull fishing once. I had this reel that was all broken, the line jammed, and I couldn't find spare parts so we wanted to see if we could blow out the drag. So I cut off the hook and sinker and I tie an old rotten mackeral head to it. I toss it out on the parking lot and this gull takes it and runs with it. Before he could swallow it, I yanked and it flew out of his mouth. So then my buddy trys it. Don't you know he gets the line wrapped around the seagulls leg? We couldn't break him off because he would eat the mackeral head with whatever was left of the line. So I went and tackled him and got him undone. Last time we did that! It was funny but we didn't realize the dangers of it and it was immature of us.(Hey, I was 14 and he was 12)

We did blow the drag out by tying the line to a back of a friend's car. That was funny.

Aw Crap!!! Patrick, you're going to have PETA gunning for this site now. Fishing for Seagulls in a parking lot? Pretty stupid even at 14. But at least you didn't use a hook.

I had brought two friends up to Maine one summer and they both managed to catch birds, safely released. One caught a kormorant and one a gull. My plan was to buy some clay bird lamps from Christmas Tree shops and glue lures to their beaks until I caught a gull myself. That ended that party...

Boy, if that is what you do for fun I would hate to see what you do in your spare time.....

Those birds are SMOKERS too. Almost stripped all my line off.

The best way to get Peta people around is to say, "After I unhook a fish and I don't think it suffered enough, I take the hook, heat it up, and ram it back through it's mouth" Gets 'em everytime.

Jenn, I don't think any of us want to see what Patrick does in his spare time... Have you tried fishing eels on the outer beaches from N.Truro around up to the Race? That area can be real good with eels, sand eels, and plug/teaser combos...

John
I'll be staying up in N Truro all next week and will be fishing N Truro thru to race point maybe even to wood end fishing plugs and eels . Im hoping to hook into some real decent fish I'll let you know how I do when I get back . Ive done well other years Ive been there . This will be the first year I'll be driving on the beach . Man I cant wait .

Jenn
Its sounds like you had some fun with the blues their not stripers but they do give a real nice fight . Ive caught 2 seagulls myself once off a beach and once on a bridge the one I caught on the bridge was a high flyer . He was hooked but I was able to get him down to the bridge and unhook him unhurt .

I have tried sand eels and very minimal plugging. As for regular eels...welllll...
I seem to have a deficiency when it comes to putting the eel on the hook, actually if you want to get technical the problem happens when I cast and the eel is now launched into orbit and my hook comes back empty!!!
I have tried about three diffrent ways and the only way the eel actually stayed on was "my very own method" I guess because it was my first time and really did not have a clue.........needless to say I had some strange looks! But it stayed on! When I took advice and did it the "right" way it never failed to become airborne!

Jenn....and all I guess

Just personal info from this year....I have fished the Race heavily this year. I have the most success on the incoming tide just to the right of the Light House (if you were facing it) I walked between the Light and Hatches Harbor casting a 6" Schoolbus Bomber and was getting nailed almost every cast. I started at about 9 pm and went until sunrise catching many many fish.

Problem was: I was into so many schoolies, I pinched the barbs Then it happened. I was at the mouth of Hatches when I got nailed. The fish darn near spooled me. Jumped 2 times. The guy next to me said it had to be in teh high 40's range. On the second jump, the line went slack. No more fish! Heavy & strong fish. Felt good. I will find her and touch her once...then let her go. I will I tell ya!

Hope all goes well!

Bob

Hi Bob! To the right is actually where I have had the most luck! And just out of curiosity, would you happen to be the same Bob myfriends were telling me about? They kept telling my husband and I about these two guys whom they fished with about four years ago maybe?? That is the same spot for them as well! Is it possible we too may have met? We have not been able to make it down there much this year but when we go that is our favorite spot!

Thanks for the info......

Jenn,

Sorry...works keepin' me too busy to check the boards. 2 guys....now you're really scaring me Not sure who your friends are. I fish with another guy by the name of Matt. I drive a GMC Jimmy Green with a "Home Grown" fishing rack on the back. My buddy drives a Black Passport with the same type of rack.

Now......if they said we did it, we didn't! We have been chasing the fishies for about 6 years now. Just got the OSV permits 3 years ago. Matt's cousin's own Blackbeards in Eastham. I bet those are the people you are thinking of....maybe?

Yeah, they said you DID do it...ha!ha! No seriously...
No, just curious...there names are Ray and Tammy. They met with a couple guys one year and told us all kinds of stories about how NICE these people were and fun to fish with, oh..and all the great advice they recieved!!! Unfortunately they have split since but that was all we heard about was how great they thought these people were!! So just for ha-ha's I thought I would ask because there were similarities there! Oh and one more thing. Oddly enough they told us to keep an eye out for a Jimmy, though what color I do not remember....creepy, huh?!! MAYBE i AM STOCKING YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

disclaimer: The above comment was a joke based on the whole "I know where you fish and who you are" topic and in no way will I be responsible for some people taking that seriously.

Bob Thomas

Nope....not familiar with those names. As for the Jimmy thing, those people walked in front of me and I couldn't swerve so I hit them. Only 1 died though

What did you do with the body??? Because I got snagged out there ....you may want to be more carefull with these types of things!!! If you want some pointers just let me know...haven't been caught yet!

JohnR

Please, no stories about bodies on the beach. I already know of two places where bodies have washed up or a being dug out for... and BTW, that can really screw up a night of fishing...

You know...this reminds me....you locals may remember this one. A few years ago, there was a murder/suicide on High Head entrance. Just that morning, about 5-6am, we were on the way down the road when we decided to try the Race itself instead.......BEST CHOICE WE EVER MADE!! What a mess that would have been....BUT...we caught fish and that's all that counts!
