I've got the lathe setup in my garage. It's a rather large garage fitting 2 vehicles and a nice sized working area and about a 10' ceiling. I've seen too much dust getting around the area and in the air and wanted to try to cut it down.

Will the above system be alright or am I just spending money on something that won't work? Currently, I use my shopvac when turning to suck the chips etc. up but still see a lot of airborn dust. Wanted to cut that down by hanging this over the lathe.

Searched but I kind of have a unique situation where the garage is so big that I'm afraid it won't be effective?

I've got a JDS, something similar, it cuts down on dust, but is loud so I don't use it much. You might try a different filter on your shop vac first and better hood on your lathe.

I can't say if it will work or not but I solved the problem of dust every where by putting plastic on the ceiling and on all 4 sides of the lathe area, roughly 6x8' area. I just use a respirator and do all my turning in the bubble and the dust stays within. When i am done I just vacuum it all up. Keeps the rest of the cellar pretty much dust free. P.

I have a Jet air cleaner in my garage that does a great job of getting rid of suspended dust particles quickly. It looks to be about the same size as that one. My garage is about 20 x 20 and the air cleaner is in the middle. If the dust has to travel past you to get to the cleaner, You will still get a lungfull. I try to set it up so that when I am sanding, my back is not towards the air cleaner. This is not always possible so I always wear the respirator. I can take it off much sooner when the air cleaner is on.

i have the three speed jet- works great. follow scotts advice on install- i also have dust collectors runnuing to all machines.

Jet three speed w/ remote. Basement shop with full foundation addition, so it is mounted in the old hopper window opening. Scott is dead on about the high end filter, also withstands the cleaning with airhose. I need to clean filter almost daily, or performance drops off dramatically. You do not want it blowing at you...

I use our central vac, vents anything that gets past the filter outside. Very little dust. I've often thought why not use a shop vac (I know it's loud) and vent the exhaust outide?

My lathe, sander and drill are all on the back wall of the garage, as if you're pulling straight in with the car in the left bay, they're directly in front of you, almost at the corder. I also forgot to mention that the garage is heated by a commercial propane furnace suspended from the ceiling, in the back left corner.

So if I understand you correctly, I should mount the cleaner above the lathe/drill/sanding station.

Here's a crappy Paintshop of the area. Should I mount it above the green square with the blue "X"? That's the lathe area.

Forgot one thing in the picture, the 2 "L" shapped boxes are workbenches.

Since you have to work around the propane heater in the corner then the ideal place is to have it mounted to the right of the lathe by about 8' or so and have the air outlet turned to the right.

I ended up with the Jet 3 speed air filtration system. It was on sale on Amazon for $199. Got GREAT reviews and even got the electrostatic filter. The Grizzley had Horrific reviews and seemed cheaply made, apparently.

We'll see how it goes!
