Yes I waited to long, just picked this up this morning and they only had floor models left...gave me $100 off..seems to work awesome ...we lose power here alot and I figured after this storm and already being without power for 11 hours it was the right time....Cant wait to build a little house for it and set it up right...I will say it saved alot of food in the fridge!

We got trees down everywhere , on lines thru houses across roads. What a mess it seems just like a Hurricane.

Water came up to the back building at the shop almost inside Vinny’s house

One of the guys from the board (forget his name) up the street on County Rd trees came down snapping a bunch of poles brought down all the lines and ripping them out of the houses. N Star will be there for a while.

Another house, old spruce tree snapped and went on the house taking down the power lines & outside brick chimney and lots of damage to the front.

Helped my neighbor cut a bunch of trees that were down. I got 4 –5 cords of wood for next year.

Get a UPS - if you have a laptop and run the Cable Modem / Router on the UPS and Lappy on the battery you can run both for extended periods of time. This morning I disconnected my UPS and ran the TV for the morning news for a half hour before turning off the TV

actually ...you do it by extending the exhaust into a flexible metal pipe (tube) that goes into a 55 gallon drum full of wire to break up the sound ....and the 55 gallon drum is burried sideways like a big ole muffler in a c shaped pit to further muffle the noise.

don't ask me how i know that :bl:

Had a tree take down the power lines last year. Took 25 hours to get power back. Went out after that and bought a generator and transfer station. Since then, not even a blip :mad:

E#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&....fwiw, I was reading a lot before I got the generator. Seems most people are taking those plastic small storage bins like this one and store/run them inside. Keeps them protected. Just a thought. I have a deck with that plastic corrugated (sp) sheeting under it. keeps the generator nice and dry :D

It is going to cost me 1100 bucks to clean up the trees in my yard. Pines one on top of the other leaning towards the house. Hope it doesn't blow too hard tonite.

I can't run the whole house with my generator. It's about 7500 watts (Lowes special).

I bought a Gentran "Transfer Station" It allows 6 circuits. I had an electrician come in and install it. I have the following circuits connected:
1. Main Fridge
2. Second Fridge
3. Microwave
4. Heat
5. Freezer
6. 3 plugs for television and light

I can run all these at once. Basically, the power goes out. I wheel the generator outside and connect the 220 line from the generator to the transfer station. I then fire the generator up and turn the "juice" on to the line. Then, one by one, I flip each circuit up, allowing a little time for the generator to catch up. Once all 6 go, I'm all set. There is no need to kill the main box as the transfer station has a built in "backfeed stop" This prevents someone working on the lines from getting zapped, thinking the power is off, by the generator. Once I see the lights on in the rest of the house, I just reverse the process.

There are generators and transfer stations out there that will run the whole house, turn on the minute power is lost etc, but it was far beyond what I needed and very expensive.

All told, the generator was $700, transfer station $300 and electrician about $140. Short money for the piece of mind having power when needed. The day we lost the power, we lost a LOT of food as it was 90 degrees out. Now, even in winter, my family is all set and the food is in fine shape.

Hope that answered your question. I did a TON of research on the subject online. So many ideas but, as always, money dictates what you can and cannot do :o

I have the same system bob has.. never had to use it though :huh: power rarely goes out...

Just remember (and this is one thing that trips alot of people up)

You have to fuel the thing...It does absolutely NO good to buy a huge generator and not be able to fuel it...some only run for a few hours on a fillup....some are HUUUUUGE gas guzzlers.

Make sure you have a plan for fuel in place, running down to the local gas station to refill ONE jerry can won't work if you have to run for multiple days.

My dad lost power for 5 days last winter due to that big ice storm in Maine. Since he's on a road with not alot of people on it in the winter they were left waiting for quite a while before the power company came to fix their part of the lines that were down.

if the power goes out......I have some canned goods, candles, and a wood stove...oh ya....also bottled water and batteries.......

Propane is the way to go.

Holds a bit of gas and runs for about 8 hours at my load. Got the gas stored in the shed for the mower/snowblower so I'm set. 'Bout 10 gallons reserve and 5 in it.

either that or get a combined heat and power system installed in your house and you'll never have to worry about power going out ever again.. as long as the natural gas is running, you're set.

of course one of these runs like 30K installed, so the generator might be the way to go....
personally, I'm with Slingah, whip out the candles and the ghost stories and wait till the lights come back on!!

Mine is basically the same thing, it worked awesome and ran a good 10 hours on about 4 gallons of gas, not to bad considering I was keeping two refridgerators going...Going to set it up like you did and tie it right into the fuse panel, candels are nice but losing a couple hundred dollars worth of groceries is no fun, anyway, very happy with the way it worked . Mine has a subaru motor and while you can certainly hear it, its not so loud that its unbearable..So now its put away till the next storm...I cant wait........

about the fuel thing....
i ran a Lister Generator ...every day for five years
it was a huge 5 cylinder diesel ....for running the well pump
and utilities.. i went to mexico every week to buy diesel at half price..
then you back pump it from your secondary tank to your main tank.
The machines usually work... but how you mange your fuel needs
is what makes it easy and nice. The thing about diesel is its storability
feature ...doesnt go bad and isn't as flamable as gas.

Just think Bill , in the fall you can blow the leaves off your new generator using the noisy leaf blower. That ought to put you in Tim the Tool man heaven! :)
