View Full Version : Trip to Maine today Storm pics
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 05:30 PM I've got 121 pics from today and they all need to be edited down in size so bear with me. If anyone wants the full size pics of any of these then email me they're like 3000x2000 size.
This first one is Long Sands just after high tide. 30-40% of the sidewalk is gone there. The whole length of the beach looks like this today.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 05:35 PM This is near Libby's looking northeast. Those waves are HUGE. Full of seagulls working the white water...probably crabs etc getting stirred up. When those waves hit the rip rap the spray goes up a good 40' here. The beach is a good 30' down at this point.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 05:41 PM This one went over the entire road. The other picture shows what almost the entire length of the beach looks like. They're plowing the road with snowplows and front end loaders. There were some big rocks being thrown there while I was there today. I had to be careful where I stopped.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 05:46 PM Couple shots of what people's lots look like down there. How'd you like to clean this stuff up. Holy moley. Some of these rocks are 4-500 FEET from where the riprap is. In some cases up the side roads quite a ways.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 05:52 PM This is Short Sands. Note the lobster Traps in the road :hihi: That's all sand on the left of the pic. What a mess they got to clean up. If any of you guys know York Village there is seaweed all the way to the Fire Dept!
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 05:55 PM This is Short Sands again, beach moved into the parking lot :conf: That's a few truckloads of sand
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 05:58 PM Entire downtown smells like rotten seaweed :skulz:
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:01 PM Dad's house. That's about a 12-14' curl right there.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:04 PM Whitewater anyone?
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:08 PM Normally I fish on these rocks. Not today :uhoh: Dad said yesterday that it was whitewater as far as he could see.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:12 PM You can't really tell by the pics but these troughs were easily 10' between wave periods.
Lotsa birds workin everywhere today.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:19 PM I saw birds get swallowed by some of these waves today. That was kool :uhoh:
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:23 PM Down the street from Dad's on the way out. The road was closed in several places. That tree wasn't there before. That's scary knowing that thing was floating around the ocean somewhere just waiting to get hit by a boat
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:27 PM Philips Cove looking back towards Dad's house. Wow.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:31 PM I was trying to shoot a pic of the road...about a 2-3' drop where the pavement ends...or a huge pile of crap.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:35 PM Took a ride up to Nubble on the way back. One of the prettiest lighthouses in New England. Used to ride my bike here every day when I was a kid.
Wind was seriously honkin from the ne.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:36 PM This guy was doin his best to stay pointed into the wind :hee:
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:40 PM Nobody fishin today :hee:
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:44 PM Looking ne at nubble. Wind was probably 25-30 gusting up there today. If you ever been up there you get an idea just how big these waves are. That's prob 30-40' down to the water on that side.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:46 PM hey who you lookin at :hee:
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:49 PM Waves were so big on the other side of Nubble that you could see them breaking over the island. I fish that on the other side. Usually you can pull right up to the rocks. The roar was awesome.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:52 PM This guys boat was covered real nice all winter and lost it's shrink wrap in the storm. Trailer even fell off the wood blocks holding it up. Takes a pretty strong wind to move a boat that big. His house is worth 3-4 mill so he can afford a new boat :D
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 06:57 PM Long Sands after high tide. They had just cleaned this down with a plow too.
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 07:02 PM Stopped at the Lobster Cove on the way back. Waves were crashing over the road and these nuts were driving right through them. Rocks smashing their cars and all
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 07:05 PM This one caught my eye. About 20' up, looked like a healthy tree too. How much wind do you think it takes to do that yikes
That's all I'll post. How to kill an hour on the computer. Hope you guys liked the shots. Mother nature is cool.
scoobe 04-18-2007, 07:26 PM Crazy!
striprman 04-18-2007, 07:40 PM Nice pics. Mum, me and my little bro spent summers at Libbys when I was 9-12 years old. Not as bad as '78 when the candy store at Libbys was destroyed, but still awesome pics (I was wondering if Fun-O-Rama was still there, spent many hours there playing Skee-Ball when I was a little kid). Nice pics of The Nubble too.
See any "Maine lobsters" on the road ?
Casting Z's 04-18-2007, 07:43 PM Things might be a little different fishing from shore this year. All the structure has been rearranged. There's sand where just rocks where and rocks piled up to the top of the storm walls where the sand was.
We might not have the bottom contour we've all got used to and that scares me!
Just when I thought I was a good fisherman, because of a couple good fishing holes.
Seacoast NH
UserRemoved1 04-18-2007, 07:51 PM striprman FUNORAMA rocks. I got tickets from 35 years ago :hee:
Skeeball has been my fav in there my entire life. They still use the original maple balls from back then too :kewl: Not sure if you know or not but the movie theatre and Pop's Shell shack were torn down and are being converted into a hotel now.
Casting Z you are so correct , this year I have been watching some of my spots very closely and I am amazed at the changes I've seen. There's going to be some nice fishing on LS with that little bowl now there...it was all rocks before for about 25 years. Now it's a nice sand bowl area that should hold some fish in that corner. :kewl:
striprman 04-18-2007, 08:04 PM Hearing that Pops is gone makes me sad. I loved that place.
Ake G 04-18-2007, 09:24 PM Hey Salty, Nice pics but please don't get too specific....
tynan19 04-18-2007, 09:25 PM Scott, thanks for sharing. Heading to the Mnts tomorrow to see some of the larger rivers such as the Saco and Swift. Might head to the Maine Coast on Fri.
Clueless 04-18-2007, 09:34 PM Not sure if anyone noticed, but behind the pile of sand in the Short Sands parking lot is the #2 buoy. There's a better shot of it here. (http://picasaweb.google.com/josephlipton/PatriotsStorm/photo#5054565524676130226) What a mess...
UserRemoved1 04-19-2007, 04:16 AM ake I burned a private POSTED spot :D
Clueless I missed that! niiice I know that buoy well. You wouldn't have seen it over the tops of the waves today. Didn't stop too long down there.
UserRemoved1 04-19-2007, 04:18 AM Pops has been gone for many years. I can remember going in there as a kid. Shells were real cool back then. The wildlife was neater to a kid though :hee: I got my first blowfish there.
Hearing that Pops is gone makes me sad. I loved that place.
