It's July and August----not the best ( unless you have a boat ).Fish deep nights for stripers , on the right tides.Otherwise, crab, fish for porgys. Fluke , if you have a boat. Or like the most of us, wait 'til Sept. :) :)

Like Jenn said patience,if the fish came too easy you just get spoiled just like the army you got to earn your stripes, and night is better.

good luck and remember PATIENCE

Keep at it, I just started surf fishing this year. Been out every weekend from april on, I find people friendly enough to offer info.
I find at times that I don't even know what questions to ask because I'm so new, At those times I watch what other people are doing. Find people to fish with (lots on this web site) and have fun. I catch stripers every weekend and I love it, I found great fishing partners from this site (thanks guys) even if I caught zero fish each weekend I learn something new every time.:D

You are more than likely doing nothing wrong! They have to be where you are fishing, and they have to be willing to eat!

I fish Newport a lot. The bite has slowed considerably. I noticed it fell off after the blues moved in. I will be out at Brenton reef Tuesday after work. Green bucktails have been good. Drifting eels as well. Keep this in mind the important part of the battle is to be where the fish are. For whatever reason and belive me there is many, they may not be where you think they are. Try me on the radio channel 09 Surfunner. Hang in there it's worth it.

step 1) RELAX already. Its only July/Aug. If you want to fish for bass in the hot summer...fish deep. (bass like it cool)

step 2) Polish your skills and get set for the fall run

step 3) Bass like to feed at night, so try to fish at night or at dawn. IMO daytime bass fishing is productive only from a boat. (yes I have caught bass in the daytime from shore, but the time/payoff ratio is FAR better at night)

step 4) fish slowly. This ain't no blue fish.

step 5) be quiet. (ie. Minimize noise, esp when shore fishing)

step 6) Try different methods and spots. Walk the beach cast/ wake the beach cast...continue until you connect, then stop. If the fishing slows, begin walking again.

step 7) Talk to the locals (shops and fishermen around boats) be polite and inquire about how the fishing is. (ask if they are catchin any bigones)

step 8) Buy something in the local shops. Most of these guys will tell you a lot if you buy something from them. Drop fifty bucks on plugs/bait and you will find the current hotspots.

step 9) Keep going. When you hear the fishing is hot, fish often.

step 10) Don't just fish the same spot each time you fish. Cover some ground.

step 11) boat fishing is 20X more productive in the mid summer then shore fishing IMO due to water temps. It is not to say you cant catch fish from the beach but you stand a far better chance in the mid summer from a boat. In the fall work the beach.

step 12) EVERY bass fisherman has gotten skunked at one time or another. No matter how good a fisherman he is. Don't expect to catch something everytime you go.

step 13) Read the fisherman and bb's to keep current.

step 14) Go with someone who knows the area well.

step 15) try using big plugs worked slowly at night and live eels. The key words are S L O W and B I G.

step 16) fish remote areas that others will not put in the effort to hike to. (It pays off... big)

step 16a) Learn to "read the water" , rips dropoffs, signs of bait, tail drags, etc
step 16b) Listen for feeding fish
step 16c) keep you eyes scaning the surface for any swirl
step 16d) tread lightly

step 17) keep only what you can eat relase the rest.

step 18) if your surf fishing, don't let bad weather (wind/ seas/ rain/ even snow/ ect) deter you. sometimes this works towards your advantage. (sometimes not) but when it does it can be fantastic.

step 19) when your not fishing, read about fisihing.

step 20) enjoy yourself and the wonderful outdoors. Fishing makes memorys that last forever, that is what is so great about the sport.

step 21)keep you gear in good repair. (read: FRESH LINE, sharp hooks and smooth drag)

step 22) avoid crowds. Yes there are probably fish there but it aint worht the hassle fighting with some fools at 2:00 am about which rock someone is standing on. The beach is wide.

step 23) There is ALWAYS something to learn about this sport. Keep an open mind and be humble.

thats what comes to mind at the moment. stay at it, you will hook up. Be serious about it and you will consistanly hook up. Make every cast count. Seek the "good" water.

Sandman - very respectable post, couldn't sleep that night, slow day @ work - Sandman right on all accounts of course. If i may add .02c - "nighttime is the rightime + live eels = bass" This is the basic formula......

4 times fishing and just the skunk?

well I must really suck, because I must have made over 50 trips to catch a bass before I got my first one:(
But it was before the internet and before there were alot of fish, the limit was 36" then. I kinda figured things out as I went along, I guess I was a real Stumblie.

You have recieved alot of correct advice so far I would say, better luck next time. Fishing is a constant learning experience.

My skunking streak would be humerous if I got to go more often. Being limited in time, the fishgods smile upon me... sort of...

I've goten skunked three times, but three times managed to catch.

OK, OK, several rats and a couple of keepers don't really count as catching, but it beat the CRAB i caught the last skunkrun. No clue what I'm doing.

RELAX. Enjoy being outside. Being there is half the fun. Keep asking these guys. They'll help you out as much as anybody.

Nice list Sandman :btu: .

Yep, persistence, Slip's kept at it and now has become pretty stinkin' competent out on the water. Sure, he's picked up some from reading boards and books and he's also had some people take him under their wings - BUT - the key payoff was that he goes and goes and fishes and fishes, refines his technique and did I mention that he GOES fishing :D ?

Me - I feel as rusty as a bare mustad hook dropped in a tide pool. I've not been getting out with any regularity and have been too banged up to fish the better spots (not that I've been getting out much)...

Mrmacey - you have a new boat and years to enjoy it. If the history of the last few years repeats, pretty soon the Bay will errupt beyond anything in your wildest dreams. When the bass & blues follow the invasion of 'nut bunker, there is one massive blast from Providence to Beavertail. And the bigger gals will be just outside. Time & patience, you have both, you will hook up. Just remember that right now is the slower time of the year...
