I picked up an older 2Hp from Little Round out on the cape this past winter. http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripertalk/showthread.php?t=36836&highlight=motor

After struggling a little to keep it running we tore it down completely and replaced all worn parts and cleaned it all up. Rings, all plastic/rubber parts, all ignition components, waterpump, seals etc were replaced. In general it was all there just had a bunch of hours on it and needed some TLC. This was a great project for the kid because it is very simple and you can explain and show him exactly how an internal combustion engine operates. He asked a lot of good questions in the process. It is hard to show someone how a engine works on today's machines. He was doubtful we could put it back together esp when I took off the crank and 30 needle bearings the size of a piece of rice fell out onto the shop floor, but we managed.
Most parts are available thru a couple places on the west coast that seem to have a lot stock of parts for older motors. The most difficult thing was getting new decals. I couldn't get them anyplace and had trashed the ones on there trying to remove the pull chord/recoil assembly. But thru the Internet I found someone (a women on the west coast) who would make new ones up for me from photos and dimensions I sent her for $30. These were great and are nicer then the originals. Anyway we got her back in service and good for another 20 years:btu:

Again, thanks to LittleRound for selling this to me at a reasonable price.

Well done Sandman!! I'm sure your boy will be a boater and what he's learned and will continure to learn is priceless info when you turn the key (or pull the cord) and the motor won't start. He'll know the basics and most problems are just that 'basic' when you know where to look. :kewl:

Fishsmith, that was really the point, every boater knows until you have some hands-on experience with engines you really can't figure out how it works or what could the problem be no less fix it at sea.
My wife said why not just get a new one? (when she saw the entire motor in parts soaking in degreaser. I said half the reason you do this is to let him get "into" it and understand how this works. I know a new little 4 stroke would be better set up but this thing has character and will look great on my restored 1964 Dyer Dhow. A kid have have a lot of fun with a gallon of gas with a dingy in a salt pond.

Took it out with the boy for a sea trial yesterday...started up got halfway out in the saltpond and it died. My son said...."Dad, did you open the gas vent on the top of the tank?":fishslap: DOH!

See..that is the kind of thing I was hoping he would pick up! I can't believe I left that shut though:hee:

That's awesome, he sounds like he's got the knack already! I'm guessing it ran perfect the rest of the way?
