View Full Version : Boston Harbor
Bonefish 07-29-2002, 12:13 PM I live in downtown Boston. I was thinking of doing some fishing in the Harbor area. Has anyone fished without a boat for stripers out there? With plugs or eels. I'm thinking I might just try my own discovery but was looking for any insight. Also does anyone get together to fish in the Boston area? I loved to gain some insight into the area as I have just moved from North Carolina to the "Big City"
DaveTV 07-29-2002, 03:06 PM Try Castle Island area in South Boston, or out by the JFK Library- not when the tide is low though (duh)--- saw your profile - FYI no local calls Boston "Beantown"...
I heard that the black falcon pier in southie is open to fisherman.
It is high off the water so you need special equipment to get em' up.
i fished there years ago (b4 boating) and we all did really well.
Good luck.
shore manic 07-29-2002, 05:51 PM a month ago i took the train in from plymouth scouting out some spots that looked good don't know if ther's structure there but to left of rowes wharf and also the fed court house looked like nice spots but again
gettin the fish up could pose a problem except at high tide. explore the area and i,m sure there are some great spots
jsox21 07-31-2002, 01:03 PM I live right in the city and I was in the same situation as you were, I couldn't really find any solid places on my own, but I went out for a trip with bill n jules guide service and had a great time. They showed me a few spots that were close to the city and offered some quality fishing. send me an email at jsox21@aol.com and maybe we can get together a do a little fishing....
DaveTV 07-31-2002, 01:21 PM I am assuming you have no car - you can take the redline to JFK/UMASS and Umass has free shuttle out to the campus, which is right next to JFK library - walk out back by the Library, there is a walkway area you can fish from when the tide is up
Bonefish 07-31-2002, 01:26 PM I do have a car...I was thinking of hitting soem of these spots all of you have mentioned...thanks for the help....
JohnR 07-31-2002, 02:10 PM The shore fishing certainly gets better from Quincy South and Deer Island north. I have not fished it recently but I'm told Deer Island is open again and parking is good - Check this: link here (http://mapserver.maptech.com/homepage/index.cfm?lat=42.351390000000002&lon=-70.958330000000004&scale=10000&zoom=50&type=1&height=498&width=498&icon=0&&scriptfile=http://mapserver.maptech.com/homepage/index.cfm&bpid=MAP0060030900&latlontype=DMS) and check out the tons of structure to hold fish - :btu: and there is often pleny of bait in that area....
I would give it a lookover on a nice day at low tide, give your self a couple hours to check it out (maybe without your rod :eek5: ) and then go back at night with bait, plugs, or eels....
It looks pretty good. Might need Korkers :D
jsox21 07-31-2002, 02:38 PM John R,
Thanks for the map it was very helpful, I wasn't aware that the island could be reached by car. Would you happen to know how to get out there from Boston?
JohnR 07-31-2002, 02:47 PM Yer welcome... You can get there by going thru the tunnels, past the airport, hooking east into Winthrop - follow the main drag to Deer Island. You should run a mapquest as it's been a Long Time since I've been out there and it's no doubt changed by now... Look fer rocks :D
jsox21 07-31-2002, 02:52 PM thanks John, I'm a little unsure how to drive their, just started driving in the city a few months ago, I tried Mapquest but I don't know what to put in as a final destination, I tried Deer Island but all that gave me was deer creek road. Has anyone else fished from Deer Island from shore and/or know how to drive their?
Bonefish 07-31-2002, 02:56 PM Try Tafts ave, South Boston, Ma 02127
That should work on Mapquest. I'm going to go out there today, but High tide is at 5:15 is there anyplace to wade? or is it mostly fishing from rocks? ALso would you suggest fishing the high tide or low tide out there?
jsox21 07-31-2002, 02:58 PM bonefish, I sent a reply to your email, let me know how you the fishing goes today...
JohnR 07-31-2002, 03:01 PM Use this LINK (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?zoom=8&mapdata=AJx7q5MwhEiQo5hEsxL4Y0IB%2f1sDW84Yv3l%2bch K0JfT5xAK64%2ffMbbVTZuvzuMah2RjqMdFAd3Si%2fdOT%2b3 thzXPmScgCPv%2bw5QElKrhSrzS%2bey9FlFmulsqtHOBQ6glr qzShM%2bC8PcB6jpp0%2b0LaNhi%2fsTK4WTdUQE4QRf2bdlH8 Ts99ffvlRxXcZm4aJqP7cyurbET0NYnY5m7KPc3qrNBu6Hyn2z BRtg%2bscgY4hk3huwKIYQ6VVslZuBJ%2f5EOQyjb2zO8qPVYs %2fM0D4Szp2cfjZHjYbQ2BC%2ffSbxhSP5j%2fVpA2I2G%2bAL Z1wxJYK99VUq2zv8udQcHvjkQyBPg0BfDrOffRkSXk) to get you started
Bonefish - where are you talking about in Southie?
Bonefish 07-31-2002, 03:07 PM I have a copy of Map Point from Microsoft. When I look at deer island, the point at which the street stops is that address. It goes by point shirley and down to the Water treatment Plant. I have not been out there yet but that is what Mapppoint tells me.
Bonefish 07-31-2002, 03:11 PM try 129 tafts ave, winthrop, ma 02152
Thats the ticket!
shore manic 07-31-2002, 05:33 PM JOHN R, thanks for the link to mapserver a great site, sure will be usefull!!;)
Bonefish 08-01-2002, 01:24 PM I went out to Deer Island last night..nothing biting, but I found a great place off of a jetty. Thanks for your help. At least I have somewhere local to go...Now I jsut need to catch a Fish...Thanks again for everybody's help!
JohnR 08-01-2002, 03:07 PM Bonefish - what were you using and what was the tide doing?
BTW - How was the parking?
Bonefish 08-01-2002, 03:13 PM I got out there around 6:30...parking was fine. I walked to the other side of the docks. I was really on a recon mission, but I took your advice and brought a rod with me. I was able to cast into the breakwater and there were 4 or 5 other boats around. I did not see anyone taking anything in though. The tide was on it's way out. I was using some poppers and mag lures. Tried a Kastmaster and rubber baits. I didn't have any bait with me, but I will bring some eels next time. I might even go back out there tonight. any Ideas?
JohnR 08-01-2002, 03:22 PM I would say eels at night, soft plastics (GS makes some sweet baits), certainly small swimmers too. It "LOOKS" to be one of the better shore spots near boston. Plenty of current, small bait in the area, structure....
Good luck
