I got my first surf rod today, i just want to know if my set up is ok. I am thing of throwing plugs in the 2-4 ounce range. I purchased a 10'6 ugly stick custom surf rod It is rated for 2 - 12 ounces and it's pretty rugged,i think it is heavy action. I paired it with a quantum great white spinning reel, Cabelas had it on sale so I went with it. I have fished inshore for years but this will be my first really hitting the surf. Has anyone used this rod and if so how is it. Thanks And I apologize for sounding like a noob. What is the length most comonly used ? Would the 11'6 I was looking at have been overkill?

The Ugly Stick is a decent rod and a great blank (ie - better off custom than factory built). The rod is rugged and good for the money. I know nothing of the great white reel.
this should be an OK combo for now. Down the road seek some more advice and you'll see some other good options such as Quarrow, Tica, and some others as well as some of the more custom stuff...

I didn't know much about the great white reel until I stumbled on it, I was thinking it would be ok for a year or two, then maybe I can have a set up built for me.

Next time advice ask before you buy, of course you will get 20 different answers

10'6" is fine for the surf .. Very wide range on those sticks because of that soft tip .. Good beater sticks .. My kids grew up using them ,,still got them . They were like $59.00.. good value.. They had 704's on them .. don't know about that reel you mention .. You'll know your first good run ..
