So what's the price of cedar done in the past 4 years?

I just had a materials quote of $820 for 7 sections of 3' cedar stockade style (not spaced picket) fence with posts. This is the better quality from a real fence company, not the Home Depot stuff.

This is a lot more than we paid for the other fence we had put up of a similar quality.

Can anybody in the know say if this is high or reasonable?

thanks,

Cedar is one of the species that has skyrocketed in price. A box of red cedar shingles has gone from 90.00 to 156.00 in two years... Our local yard is out of primed cedar clapboards, with none due in for ten days, and the factory was 100,000 linear feet behind orders....

Bid a mahogany deck, 1x4 decking, on a Monday, price was up 25 cents a linear foot by Friday.....and yes, it was the same species, cambara, that was quoted both times. (Yeah, I know it's not real mahogany, but it passes for it in decking for ten year now)

As an aside, we did a deck 2 seasons ago out of Cambara and Meranti I think on the rails.

That stuff checks like a mutha, the most unstable wood I've ever seen. The 5/4 decking isn't that bad, but the top rails are terrible.

Use Austrailian Timber Oil, Mahogany Flame tint. It keeps the wood nice and alive, reapply once a year.

Spence, don't know if it helps, but I just got a quote for a split rail fence, three rails, two gates and wire on the inside to keep the boxer in. The two sides are about 120' out from my house and then 80' wide. Posts at the gates and house will be in concrete. Whole shebang installed is $3,300.
