pike / rt90 thru ny and down from there or across or 84 to 80 thru PA? Going to Dayton and pulling a trailer...

Which one is easier drive and which one got more men in bloo?

gps shows both ways. Looks straighter thru PA but not sure on roads.

Pa route, used to do that to my folks house in KY.

Scott I drove to Clarion, PA several years ago for a wedding. I took 80 West around Scranton, PA etc. The road has some hills and the 18 wheelers owned the road. It seemed like every trucker was doing 75 MPH and up. Just keep in the right lane and watch out for the deer and bear. If I remember correctly, I saw something like 7 dead deer and one dead black bear on the side of the road. Not an overly crowded road either.

UM I'll be about 20' shorter than one of them trucks :hee:

Been to Harrisburg etc before but never Dayton and it's one of those places you can't get there from here.

The 90 to 71 route is shown as 15 miles longer and 10 minute difference with no road changes basically. The PA route got me goin all over the place and one mapquest has me goin thru the Bronx which sucks cuz I'll end up there at friggin rush hour in the morning. :conf:

Shortest distance is down 95/bronx/then 76 west thru southern PA.

Take you thru Middle PA 95/476/80/71

Rt. 84 down to Rt. 80 is probably your best bet. I've made the drive to Pittsburgh a couple of times that way and also took a vacation out to Cleveland. There are some men in blue usually holding up around State College and and there is also a spot on 80 that will say "You have reached the highest point on Rt. 80".....about 2-5 miles after that they sit and catch you on the down slide.

after that I never saw to many.....but you never know

Going to Dayton, I'd take 95 to the PA turnpike if you can hit CT/NY/NJ during non-traffic hours.

Otherwise take 84 to 81 to 80 to 79 south to the PA turnpike west. 80 is the buggiest road I've ever been on.

Your best bet is take mass pike to NYS thruway (87) to I-90 to I-271 to I-71 to I-270 to I-70 to I-75.

I drove through that area last month and took the PA turnpike route. It was okay but was jammed up bigtime (an hour at least) between NJ and Allentown, PA (construction).

The other PA alternative: I hate the drive through I-80. It is absolutely DESERTED all the way through PA (nice scenery if you like hills and small mountain views) and I want to commit hara-kiri driving through OH on I-80 (absolutely depressing flatland).

I, myself, absolutely HATE the PA turnpike......it must add a 100 miles to the route just by the way it winds.

the 1st time I took it to Pittsburgh it took me 13 hours to get there...I took 76 to 80 to get home and it took me 10.5 hours

Ben that's the route that mapquest initially gave me. Basically go to Buffalo and turn left. If there's construction in PA then I'll prob take that route. Interesting Garmin picked the southern route.
I have a feeling that I'm better off on the northern route due to the timing of bronx traffic and then the PA construction.

traffic is definitely key, scott.

if you can get past allentown, pa in the wee hours of the morning then you'll be okay. past 7:30 a.m. however ... :wall:

otherwise ... you can take I-84 through CT (lots of congestion in Hartford and Waterbury!) and NY (smooth sailing once you're over the bridge) and then cut over to I-80 thru Scranton, PA (nice place for a coffee pitstop).

yea that's what I'm afraid of is hitting traffic like that and turning it into a 16 hour ride instead of 13. No way I'll be in Pa by that time, leaving the shop around 4.

Stay north. Way more state police on the roads in NJ & PA then in NY and you definitely want to avoid the whole CT-NY-NJ tri-state nonsense.

Plus, the NYSP will not stop you if you're doing less than 15 over the limit ;)

Why call AAA when you have mapquest. Or talk to one of the truckers that you must know Scott. If you want I'll ask my brother-in-law. All he does is drive all over the country.

Clarion ?!!! 34 years ago , I, with my bride to be stopped there. During a basketball tourney. Ate at the Clarion Clipper. Great breakfast!!

rt 90 is the way to do this. Went out this way and came back 80/84/76. Eff that 15 hours straight thru and that southern road SUCKS espc pulling a trailer. Potholes, washboard roads, just overall a bad ride on the way back compared to the northern route on the way out.

62 dead deer, all but one were does, one live deer in Ct, one turkey (besides me)
