View Full Version : wat u clean ure lures with?
Gunpowder 05-20-2007, 09:32 PM was wondering wat people clean their lures with after every use to keep them nice and shiny for the bass. i use a salt remover but was wondering if anyone used anything else to help prevent the hooks from rusting or how they stored them after using them. thanks
mike
BigFish 05-20-2007, 09:38 PM Fresh water rinse.....change hooks as needed!:btu:
Its not so much the saltwater that eats the hooks as it is the salinity from the fishes mouth.
Clammer 05-21-2007, 12:58 AM are you serious ????????

same thing I use for cleaning my reels, rods, bag and other gear..........rain
likwid 05-21-2007, 07:14 AM washing machine.
ragfly 05-21-2007, 02:01 PM I use salt-x (boaters world) or salt terminator (BassPro shops) to clean my gear, after I fish I soak my plugs for 10 minutes then rinse them off with freshwater and hang them to dry before putting them back into their boxes. I never have to replace hooks or split rings because of corrosion and it also keeps the reels nice and pretty too! I use a misting bottle with the salt-x solution, spray my reels and rods down then rinse them off with freshwater. obviously I don't do this all the time only when time permits, which is most of the time.

Umm riiiight. They rust because they're exposed to oxygen after having salt on them
I also rinse mine with rain, or better yet keep them in the water longer and they'll be exposed to less oxygen :jump:
plugs with mojo shall never be washed. :hihi:
are you serious ????????

a. not wash the stuff
b. put in wash machine
c. keep in water longer to prevent oxygen from corroding the hooks
d. oil them up with bunker juice

spence 05-21-2007, 06:05 PM Save your extra toothbrushes, they're great for working the Naptha Soap in and around the split rings.
And I've heard that if you use Seltzer Water to rinse it actually tempers VMC hooks, and in a good way.

BigFish 05-21-2007, 06:50 PM For Likwid and Throwingtimber....its a fact! I got plugs....same 2 hooks they were new with......one hook that I caught the fish on is all rusted......the other....not at all! I have noticed this for quite awhile. If you have a better explanation of why I would like to hear it??
Larry, if anything, its the fish's digestive fluids that corrode the hooks faster, but its not salinity.
electrolysis is a huge factor that many over look. the hooks are steel and the split rings are stainless... any time you put dissimilar metals together you will have this problem.. thats why folks put zincs on boats.
Young Salt 05-21-2007, 07:10 PM BF - maybe the fish rub you plug into the sandy beaches and wear off the so called permasteel finish.
==========
use hydrogen peroxide to get rust stains off your plugs or plano boxes.
BigFish 05-21-2007, 07:47 PM Sorry...Eben thats what I meant! Just from my experience, and I always notice it......the hook that lands the fish more often is rusted alot more then the other. Strange but true!
WoodyCT 05-21-2007, 08:11 PM 1. Fill tub with luke warm water.
2. Add 3 cap fulls of Mr. Bubble bubble bath.
3. Stir slowly so as not to make too mutch foam.
4. Test temp with big toe.
5. Gently slide your babies in. DO NOT dunk them over their heads.

I agree w/ TT.
The probable reason for the hook rusting is that the finish of the hook has micro scratches from the bass's mouth.
The micro scratches (broken finish) are then exposed to air.
Rinse gear with fresh water.
