View Full Version : Okouma VS 40sa or Shimano Stradic 5000FH?
Jersey_Jim 06-04-2007, 08:14 PM I was lusting for the Stradic, but then I saw the Okouma VS. The
40sa has a 6.2.1 ratio which I think will be great for Albies & Bluefish. What do you think about the Okouma VS series? TX :buds:
mikecc 06-04-2007, 08:17 PM JUNK
reelwild 06-05-2007, 01:02 PM agree
The Dad Fisherman 06-05-2007, 01:15 PM Stradic :kewl:
basswipe 06-05-2007, 03:57 PM Neither.
Do Shimano's Spheros.
blue oyster 06-05-2007, 03:59 PM stratic is the way to go (imho) i have 6 of them and 1 okouma that i use as a paper weight real trash . the stratic may cost more and have a little less string capacity but a much better reel
Jersey_Jim 06-05-2007, 06:50 PM TX, does anyone have experience whith the new Okouma VS series? That's the one I'm looking at not the lower priced models. TX
Joey G 06-05-2007, 08:06 PM Stratic ,hands down..............
Ake G 06-06-2007, 07:40 AM Both reels stink.
I have two stradics. Both got heavy use in my kayak and in the surf but I did maintain them. One is a corroded pile of parts sitting in a pie tin in my shop. One good dunking and it was finished after only 2 seasons. You would not have believed how bad it looked inside. The other (a 6000) has assorted drag issues, peeling paint and weighs a ton. One season old. Both total wastes of $$$$ for me.
I now have a Van Staal. It is a total pleasure to use and can really take a beating.
The Stradic 4000 I have has been good to me but if I was going to buy a Shimano spinning reel now I would more than likely go with the Spheros. Better suited to saltwater IMHO.
The okuma VS is sick, Ive been using it for 2 years . It probably has the best drag of any reel Ive ever used. I have a VS40 and Ive caught bass up to 20 lbs on it.
Flaptail 06-06-2007, 12:31 PM Okuma, like Tica reels are junk. Stradic, Spheros or Quantum Cabo would be my first choice.
The stradic has fussy ceramic drag washers, five minutes a week with a bath of denatured alcohol keeps them in tip top shape. Small price to pay for a great braid friendly reel ( unless it's Power Pro which sucks anyway on a spinning reel)
Slingah 06-06-2007, 03:09 PM I have beat the piss out of my Stratic and Spheros both 8000's....I'll admit not dunk friendly but what but a VanStall is...they hold up well
as Flap said braid friendly and just clean the washers now and then..
good reels for the money....
john hollenberg 06-07-2007, 03:18 PM Have you guys actually used the Okuma VS? Looked at it's insides? I got one and so far it has been the best reel value I have bought. Smooth as silk and has been fished hard already. 5 year send you a new one in the mail guarentee. I am sure I will wear it out but I have worn out Stradics, and Slammers faster and the drag has been better then the Cabo. Just my 2 cents.
Also I got an Okuma Epixor 5 years ago that has been seen a lot of service as schoolie reel, freshwater reel, and Florida trip reel and for $55.00 has been great.
Once again, The Okuma VS is not junk, some of their cheaper stuff is, but this reel has been great for me, and I fish reallllly hard.

Jersey_Jim 06-07-2007, 04:16 PM Thanks guys, this has helped me decide. NOW if anyone is looking for a reel for a Surf or Boat Rod , I bought a Stradic 5000 FG new off the internet this past winter in error. It is the same size as a Stradic 6000. Its in the classifieds here on S-B dated 5/30 for $120. I will let it go for the BRO over $105. TX  Jim
basswipe 06-07-2007, 06:12 PM If it ain't to late go for the Spheros.Quantum Boca(Cabo is over priced version) is a awesome second choice.
SPHEROS!!!
