Yep, all in RI. The fish was speared off of Beavertail and weighed in at Snug harbor.

Diver speared the fish in the gill plate. The striper proceeded to tow the 200 lb guy through the water for 10 minutes.

Believe it or not, that was the report. I wouldn't expect to see a load of divers out there or anywhere else in the state for that matter.

Free diving is not easy, and there is probably much lower release mortality than rod and reel. Most of the ones I know love their sport, and a lot of them shoot with a camera as much as a spear.

I agree, spearfishing has got to be pretty challenging and physically very demanding.

If it's made illegal we should outlaw chunking and boatfishing as well :devil2: :hihi:

That is a sweet fish. I am not sure why it should be illegal? A dead fish is a dead fish.

As someone who has a spear gun and has spear fished in other locals around the world, i think it is just as hard as fishing and agree with Bryan that it is probably more eco friendly. I've swam with stripers off RI and not felt the urge to kill them just watch. With a rod, you drag them in by their lip wear them out and hurt them even if you release them.

You should see what the guys pull up in australia. Big tuna in shark infested waters... that takes balls!

No doubt. It is extremely challenging/sporting to say the least.
