Saturday took bass to 38" off of BI's Southeast corner, and Monday evening grabbed this 45" 35lb fish off of Point Judith Lighthouse, in 50' of water. It seems like the big fish are beginning to stir again......

Our local waters are currently loaded with baitfish... Get down deep under the bait to find these guys....

Nice Fish!!!

I had the biggest striper I've ever felt on last night but screwed it up, it felt like she was going to nest me so I tightened the drag a bit and snap. Bye Bye. :af:

Brooksie - never tighten up the drag, if you have good line you can simulate that by cupping the spool with your palm and get the same effect, release you hand and your back to the easier drag. I know, I've been there and I've done it and it's why a too tight drag has cost me at least one fish from shore that could have gone 50 pounds or better :af:

Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the compliments on the fish. I will now divuldge my secret success for large bass.

Snug Harbor Green Umbrella Rig, Wire Line, 50' of water, Plug Depth 40' or so, trolling speed was 3.2mph. It's really funny but I was out there targeting blues when this guy hit, I would have never dreamed this fish would have hit. It was also only about 6:00pm, not prime fishing time by any means...Just shows that you always need to be ready...

The bass caught off BI (South East Corner) this past weekend were taken on a black tube 18" and Worm, same deal with the wire and depth fished...Seems like the bass have been hanging in the 40-50' depths.

I'm not sure if this is the biggest for the boat tourney, I had forgotten all about it actually. But if it's okay with John and others, I'll submit it into the tourney.... I am pretty certain there will be some 40lb+ fish weighed in soon though...

Sweet fish...

OK - now I'm on the same page with you. First off, travel north to Scituate and get your self in rockier water or go off Manomet but have an EXCELLENT chart in either case. Do not go solo. You will need at least one other semi-capable person when trolling in the mine fields (I mean lobstah traps). Alot of areas that hold bass hold boulders too, some tantalizingly close to creating a hole for all that water anxiously waiting to get inside yer boat... Never fly thru this area as there are tons of barley submerged hull breakers. I can't emphasize that enough.

Off Manomet, there are tons of boulders, lobsters and other bass attractants - steer clear of the lobster traps. The only time I fished the place (a few weeks ago) I marked a fair amount of nice fish in there.

If you look inside just this area (http://mapserver.maptech.com/homepage/index.cfm?lat=42.203060000000001&lon=-70.713610000000003&scale=25000&zoom=50&type=1&icon=0&&latlontype=DMS), there is tons of structure to hold fish. Just in that area alone.... Just north & south of the harbor mouth - is a TON of structrue. You can even anchor and chunk as long as you're not going to block off someone that's drifting thru.

Now next trick, get your tube & worm down. 60 pound mono might be too much, the line probably has it's own wake. Best bet is to use leadcore line and troll fairly slow. This will get your tubes down into the strike zone. Alternate tube colors - say one black & one red or orange & purple - mix 'em up. Another thing is using the soft plastics on light tackle gear. Got Stripers from http://Ledgerunnerbaits.com developed alot of his stuff in rocky ledges like that area - his plastics can be pretty deadly there where he cut his teeth on them rocks...

Get on the water early. You want to have the boat off the trailer and heading out of the harbor when it's light enough to see the lobster traps but the sun is still just below the horizon.

Good Polarized Glasses are a MUST. Not only can you occasionally see the actual fish in clear waters of Scituate & Manomet but it also helps in seeing the rocks and ledges in the area... Not only will they help you fish, they are a valueable safety device.

30 lb mono is plenty. 60 lb may be turning the stripers away.

John, you mentioned polarized sun glasses, I bought a pair for 17.99, and really can't see any difference. I imagine I probably need to spend some more money and get a decent pair.

JohnR
08-15-2002, 10:34 AM
The Flying Fisherman's are supposedly pretty good and are for cheap money - under $20. Most cheap glasses that are "polarized" don't work too well.

I invested almost a hundred smackers on a Costa Del Mar set of "fishing" glasses. They are awesome and well worth it - best pair I have ever owned and I chose lenses that work best for MY needs... I see ledges and fish that no other glasses have gotten me even close to.

From what I have seen otherwise, the Flying Fisherman's are probably the best for under $20 ( The Walmart FLW's I had really sucked in comparison for cheapys), then the low-mid range ActionOptix are good - then the Costas - then the expensive Costas and Maui Jims & Ocean Waves...

Lots of decent choices from $20 to 300

I recently bought a pair of polarized Coyote brand glasses, and they're the best pair of sunglasses I've ever owned. They beat out the Maui Jims, Revos, and Smiths of the world, and I picked them up for $70. I bought them on the Cape though, and don't know where to get them in the Boston area.

I took my Uncle out this past weekend and grabbed him this beauty off of B.I. It was the biggest fish of his life. He started the morning with a really nice 40", then 30 mins later grabbed this beast, almost 44" and about 33lbs....He is fighting an illness and this was the best medicine for him.....!!!
