I'm thinking about getting a 3mm NRS farmer john. Mainly for warm weather, deep wading to rocks. I'm open to any other suggestions/ideas.

what water?

if you're doing all-night fishing, i think a 5 mm is going to be more versatile, especially if you're going to be in MA and RI waters, where it might be a little cooler than LI Sound.

farmer johns are great in summer but if your arms get cold easily in the fall that is something to think about.

It for RI and similiar waters. I'd most likely get a 2mm wet jacket to go over it also for cooler nights. I don't usually get cold.

even if u dont get too cold, the water temps off the coast of rhody and mass dont get much warmer than 67-68 so i agree with a 5mm wetsuit. it makes it much easier to stay out for a few more hours maybe if u go with the whole suit instead of just the farmer john. good luck to ya. gotta know the waters too when ure wetsuitin, its a whole new ballgame ;)

in the early fall, even with a 5mm wetsuit i get a little cold.

I don't know, the 3MM Farmer John is very versatile. For kayak fishing, I'll wear it alone in the summer, and combine it with a Mysterioso base layer on cold days. Works great - I have the NRS one and love it.

The type of suit you're wearing makes a big difference too. Certain 3mm suits will feel like a 5 depending on how well they fit and if they're smooth skin or lined.

My 5mm Henderson lined full suit lets water in along the zipper and not having any smooth skin neoprene water clearly moves in along my legs and arms. Not a lot since the suit fits me well, but when you wear a tighter suit or one that's smooth skin on the inside you can tell the difference.

My new 5mm 2 piece (no zippers) Sporasub is clearly warmer then my old 5mm Henderson. Closer fit and a section of smooth skin around the wrists and ankles discourages water exchange while swimming. The water between my skin and the suit just cooks since it stays put. In the Henderson there's obviously more water flowing through.

smooth skin wet suit are warmer but harder to get in and out of.but nothing a little hair conditioner wont take care of.

Agreed. Even just water can be enough, depending on the suit.
