I'm using 30lb braided line and I fish off the beach to start off. I'm using pogies. I use a fish finder with a 3 oz weight then a snap swivel then a #5 striper hook with a leader. I use a nice chunk of pogie on the hook. Am I doing this right and is my setup up correct.

I'm not much of a chunker, but the few times I've done it with braid I've found that braid tangles in rocks more than mono. Anybody else have this happen? Probably wouldn't if you keep the line up off the bottom, but I was busy plugging with another rod.

I agree, Mono all the way when tossing chunks especially in the Canal. The stretch makes a world of difference when against the rough bottom. Then again you do feel fearless when using the braid but thats alot of money clinging to each lobster trap. To each their own I guess!

Yes bro. I only use Mono as well on rip raps or rock beds of any kind. Actually, i use mono 100% of the time.

I think most would use a #7 hook or a #8 circle hook even.

Not only do circle hooks minimize gut-hooking and killing short bass, but most fish are hooked in the corner of the mouth, making unhooking easier, and less likely for hook to come out.
Just remember to let the fish hook itself, and not try to cross its eyes with a hookset. That would pull the hook right out of the fish's mouth.
