im the one that wanted to make a replacement for the shads on an umbrella rig, and was repeatedly told that i was probably biting off more than I could chew. well... u were right. i tried the manual lathe route, and made some plugs based on what i remembered a plug to look like. Then i started seeing the time it takes to prepare these things, and the little pieces of hardware i was going to have to buy (the little grommets). What really bothered me was having to sand them, dip them in the linseed oil, prime, sand, maybe prime and sand again, then paint. This whole process made me decide that this wood stuff wasn't going to work out for me. I wanted to make a lot of these quickly, not one beautiful 100 man hour piece of art. Then i thought more about what shape i wanted it to be... flat. Which led me to sheet, rather than block or dowel.
Long story short I spent the last 2 or 3 afternoons working on the G-shad 3.2 (yes, i did stop at every tenth on the way to 3.2.... o ya my name is George). I'm pretty happy with the way my design is coming along. I made it from 1/4" PVC plastic that I had lying around from an old rocketry project. In my opinion, it swims like a dream:uhuh: . But I'm not that happy about what I had to do to make the hinge work right, and the tongue isn't perfect. O ya and the paint job is shameful. Partly due to a faulty/old "plastic" spray paint I had, it came out kind of lumpy or rough.
It's through wired. Well... It's kinda through wired. I actually cut a groove on one side of the lure and laid the wire into it, securing it with gorilla glue (bad choice). The belly loop is actually through wired to the "through wire". Too many through's...
Its only hinged at 1 point, which is the reason for the addition of the small struts that extend over the hinging point. It was twisting on the one hinge, and i couldn't seem to make another hinge that lined up well enough to make it swing loosely. I tried using a bit of tyvek glued into grooves as a hinge, but it wore out much quicker than expected. The struts were inspired by the V shape that I've seen at the hinge point on broken back swimbaits.
I hope this wasn't too long.... I get a little excited talking about this thing.
Here's some pics to give you a better idea. Missing from the pics is the tongue that i made.

Sorry about the dirty fingernails, my shop is pretty greasy.
