The banner from discovery channel is for shark week. My son wanted to look. Of course, to a 6 year old sharks are at the top of the food chain because I can show him sharks - the only thing better would be for me to show him living Dinosaurs. So he's reading the banner about "the true story of the worst attack ever" and we go to Discovery's site and it is the sinking of the USS Indianapolis as they returned from delivering the "Bomb" to Tinian before it was loaded on the Enola Gay.

I'm not sure if I'm going to let him watch that one live - think I'll need to tape it.

Anyway Shark Week is usually pretty stinkin' good but if you want to read an amazing story about what these guys on the USS Indianapolis went through, check out "In Harm's Way: The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis" by Doug Stanton. This is a strong and moving book that addresses some of the controversy about the problems and poor decisions that led up to the sinking of the Indy and the ordeal of the men that survived the initial sinking to slowly succumb to sharks and oil coated lungs over the following days.

Guess I'll be camped out on Discovery Channel tomorrow night!

Did anyone catch the great white show that was on Thursday nite on channel 44? These guys were doing shark research off the coast of Australia and were tagging great whites and then they were watching their "behaviours" from a distance. Some neat stuff that I learned out of it...sharks travel the "bubble curtain" in search of prey which is the area just before the white water. This is their prime hunting ground. They definitely hunt in packs but as sole predators...and they travel back and forth in the same area constantly, sometimes never leaving an area for weeks.

Sharks have different eyes than most fish...they can also see outside of the water as well as under it at the same time. So they can see you on your boat as well as what's underwater. I found that interesting.

Sharks can live out of water for up to 10 hours....

Looking forward to chark week :hee:

I am somewhat bummed as I am a huge shark week fan.

I will see Sun & Monday but my unfortunate schedule has me leaving on Tuesday morning for a Tuesday to Sunday stay in the camper on Shagwong Beach (MONTAUK!!!!!!).

In a related bit of bad news, a friend called me and invited me to go on a charter later in August. Ther charter is with Frank Mundis on The Cricket. Damn life can throw some bad news but it sure can throw good news too.

yep sharkweek and couldn't come at a better time as the hot weather has made the bite at the beach for me kind of a downer.Sharkweek will help me to stay in and watch cool programs rather than go out and get skunked .
