I don't like bait runners way to many parts inside, and more failure with these reels. I use Penns 6500ss or 7500ss, both are suited for what you want, And if you want just loosen your drag knob and it will work just fine.

i hav a 3500 shimano bait runner on a 7 ft ugly stik and my dad has a 4500 bait runner and they both work great for everything, even surfcasting... theyre cheap too, if i were you, i would get a shimano bait runner 4500.

The Shimano 4500 is a decent reel for the price and should be a good match for the 9 footer. I have one that I used to keep on an 8' rod, but it needs servicing and I haven't had time to get it in to the shop. Never any big problems with it. I've got an Okuma Coronado Bait Feeder and have had good luck with it. I bought it because I had a 9' Lamiglas 2 piece rod that didn't have a reel. I figured it would be a spare setup to keep in the car, but I've been using it as my primary setup this year. I haven't used the bait feeder feature, but the drag is smooth and it casts well. I rinse it very well after every use and put it back in the car. I've taken some pretty good fish on it and it has handled them all without any problem. I can't remember what I paid, but I know that I was suprised at how good it was for the price. It was probably around $60 give or take.

Shimano 4500B .... more $ than the sorta okuma but worth it in long run.
