Anyone know how close we are to the quota? I was just about to purchase my permit but thought it might be good to know if they were likely to shut it down soon.

Just bought my tuna permit. Went to check the bag limits and it states to "check website or information lines for current limits". So I did around the site and find the doc above. It shows I can keep 1 school and 2 large school/small med per day. However, it also states that the season closes the earlier of 2 dates, 1 of which is July 31, 2007. My permit says the season is open until 12/31 2007. Could this be any more confusing? The July 31 date must be wrong right?

I can see myself at the ramp now, tuna in hand and sourrounded by F&G officers trying to explain why I have a bluefin in August. Jeez.

Nice little bonus though. This permit is good through 12/31/2008, unless that date is wrong too.

I think that July date is for a different region but I could be wrong. The web site IS confusing and misleading at times. It should be perfectly clear.

Yeah it expires in a year and a half....you get two seasons out of it this time.

I can tell you most people don't report their catch, they don't even know they have to...this is the Achilles heel of the process and why it is a bad system and will not help significantly. This permit is a dumb idea IMO. It does nothing for the fishery as I can see. The cost of the permit only funds the permiting system and does nothing for the fish...why have it at all?

The HMS survey guys have been around the docks in South county, I talked to couple of them over the past seveal days.

The recreational fishery, referred to as teh "Angling" category is open through December. The commercial "General category" has a limit that is through July. This commerical limit will more than likely be extended. Stay tuned.
