anybody have this Fios for their internet? I am looking to getting it to replace Comcast altogether for internet and TV. It seems like a good deal. We have about 6 MBPS now with comcast and fios offers 5 mbps and 20 mbps, I think we'll start with 5, it's 10 bucks cheaper.
thoughts anyone? comments?

I've had FIOS TV, internet, and phone since last December. No problems at all with anything. TV is $23/month less than Comcast and internet is 15/2 vs. I think 5M/256k for the same price ($45/month). I can't remember ever having an outage.

On the downside, Verizons on demand isn't as good as comcast. The other thing to be aware of is your phone will change to VOIP from copper, and is then reliant on you having power. They install a UPS so you'll have phone during shorter outages, but if you lost power for a long time, I think you'll lose phone eventually.

I just signed up for the whole package, phone internet and TV. I did it mainly for the TV since they have, by far, the best Hi Def serivce. The faster internet and the cheaper phone were side benefits. They'll be installing it in a couple of weeks.

the more people that sign up for it on a particular street....

they get the service earlier than other streets because then verizon knows it has instant clientel on that street and it gets done first.

We are gonna do it
The biggest reason for switching is to get away from Comcast the monopoly, and to save about 45 bucks total. Also to get the NFL channel without having to pay extra for it since comcast realigned their channels so we can't get NFL without paying extra for it.

they have a special deal for 99 bucks all 3 internet, phone and TV, but ofcourse there is extras, but we still save money.

yep, and the wife adds stuff to the phone that we have now like 4 bucks for wire maintenence on phonelines, then you have to have the TV boxes, she wants the DVR , and then there's taxes, ends up around 150 and we are paying about 200 for all three now.

Slip as others say, you will love it. The stuff is selling like gangbusters.

The speeds currently offered are 5/2 mbs, 20/5, and 50/10. Just to clarify the phone is not Voip, it uses a separate bandwith on the fiber, the power supply, and battery back-up are for the equipment that changes the light to a digital signal at the house. You are on your own fiber, sharing with noone, which means that when johny rotten comes home from school and starts dowloading your speed will not drop unlike the competition. Also the competition's phone is Voip, so when their internet is down so is your phone.

Bruce the inside wire maintence will save you 95 bucks for a service call if the trouble is inside the house, but since you know a phoneguy.....

BTW the tech support for DSL maybe in India, but the tech Support for Fios is here, they actually have an office in Providence, Virginia, California, and Texas, that was a union negotiated thing with the FIOS.

Thats all for now gotta go install some light....:uhuh:

It saves me money.
the TV channels aren't as good but it is still worth it even if I want to add movies.

The people that we dealt with on the phones didn't give us what we wanted and we had to call and let then know about how we wanted it set up. That is why we wanted it in writing after we had decided on what we wanted but we never got anything in writing. It is all squared away now.

I think the picture might even be a bit clearer than cable. Now if someday I can afford to buy a real TV instead of the antiquated one, then I'll be able to see what all the hype is about high def.

does verizon do a la carte?

TheSpecialist
08-28-2007, 09:16 PM
Verizon does'nt do Ala Carte to my knowledge. They also don't charge you extra for digital content. I don't do billing, just installation, and maintainence. It's new, and there a re bound to be glitches, and bumps in the road, but it will get better.

Gone fishing you can get a battery at any electrical supply that sells alarm equipment. If you are really having trouble finding one pm me. Just so you know, the battery is warrantied for 1 year, and then it is the customers responsibility. We were never told that it should last 3-4 years, but I am not saying that someone did not tell you that, that being said we don't know how long they sit on a shelf in a warehouse either. Also know that the Phone company spends an average of 2,500.00 per customer to get you this service, and you pay nothing for the Optical Network Terminal, Battery Backup Unit, Power Supply, or wireless networking router. You also pay nothing for the installation.

Here is a link where you can order one online: http://www.apexbattery.com/12-volt-8-ah-alarm-battery-ub1280-home-security-systems-alarm-batteries-backup-batteries.html

Measure the size of your battery, it is a 12v 8amp hour battery

Question for you Verizon guys out there, how difficult is it likely to be to pull back on a cable in an underground conduit to get a rope through and then pull the cable and the FIOS line back through the tube?

TheSpecialist
08-30-2007, 12:35 PM
What size is the conduit, and what is in it now? Is there catv in it, or telephone cable?

Generally if it is a phone drop, we tie a string on and pull it through using the old drop, only downfall is if one breaks...

Bruce think of it like a cellphone plan, they give you the phone for just about nothing, and they usually have a 1 year warranty on the phone, but you usually sign a 2 year committment for the service. You will never have to worry about your battery though ;)

Fishin' Blues
08-30-2007, 12:48 PM
If the catv and telco drops are in the same conduit, you might have a problem because they might be twisted. There's also the possibility that the drop needed to be repaired at some point and there's a splice on it.

A little elbow grease is probably all you'll need.

Clueless

MakoMike
08-30-2007, 04:21 PM
Right now there are two CATV cables in the conduit. I was going to use one to pull two strings back through the coanduit and then use one of the string to pull the CATV cable and the FIOS cable back into the house. I'll leave one trace for future use. Do you guys use dish detergent to lube up the cables like we do with the coax when we have to run it through tight spaces on boats?

Fishin' Blues
08-30-2007, 04:29 PM
Meh, if you can't get it going it might help. I've never personally used any lubricant but I guess it's not the worst idea in the world. Try doing it without the lubricant first. You'll just have a big mess.

The fire department in town uses our holes for their alarm cables and they always use lubricant. It makes a mess of the whole manhole. I bet they do it on purpose!:poke:

TheSpecialist
08-30-2007, 07:55 PM
Mike if they try and pull the drop in and it is pre-connectorised then the connect barely fits in a 1" conduit, but it is doable. They can cut the connector off, and the drop will go, then they can splice on a connector at the house.

MakoMike
08-31-2007, 07:06 AM
Righyt now all I have is about a 40 feet coil of FIOS cable at the base of the last pole, no connector on the end. It looks pretty thin and I think it should go with no problem. Actually all they asked me to do was to pull a trace through, and they said they would pull the cable.

MAKOMIKE here's how you do it...

Take a small piece of rag.... Tie it to a piece of polypropylene electricians pull string...this stuff is very lightweight but very strong. Stuff it in the conduit...go to the other end and take a standard vacuum cleaner and stick it over as much of the piece of conduit as you can...if it leaks then wrap a rag around it. It will suck the line right thru the conduit right beside what's there...in about 4 seconds your done.

On new conduit you can use a "mouse" that ties to the line and sucks thru, this is how I do it, but if your thrifty you can save yourself alot of time and aggravation....I do this stuff all the time and I can pull a cable in a 1000' conduit in about 5 minutes flat :hee:

Works on T top legs too :hee:

As far as dish detergent for pull soap...use the electricians pull lube...it dries to powder and makes less of a mess later on. You shouldnt need it if you got a helper. If it feels like it's getting tight then pull back and you should be able to move through the tough spot if you pull without stopping.

On the downside, Verizons on demand isn't as good as comcast. The other thing to be aware of is your phone will change to VOIP from copper, and is then reliant on you having power. They install a UPS so you'll have phone during shorter outages, but if you lost power for a long time, I think you'll lose phone eventually.
you r right about the Phone the battery is only good for 3 hours :spin:

Mike those HD channels you are saying you have to pay extra for, are free with an HD box with an HD box you get the HD Broadcast, and the HD Nationals. The only ones that are extra is the movie channels tha you have to subscribe to. If you are not getting those channels call in. You should have 20+ HD channels.

The HD box in itself costs extra.Nothing's free.It costs extra.

Standard Cox Digital already comes with 20 Hd channels as long as you've an HD capable TV.Movie channels you'd have to pay for anyways.

Verizon(w/fios) has a very, very long way to go even to possibly be competative with established companies like Cox in either the business or the residential field.

I spent way to many years dealing with verizon phone,DSL and satellite tv.When Verizon can do something better than make FIOS that much faster than my already existing business internet and provide even slightly better tv and phone service,I might switch but the price would have to be right.

Every company charges extra for an HD box, they cost the companies more money. Verizon does'nt charge extra for digital service like other companies, they also offer many channels with their package that you pay extra for with other comapnies. The product speaks for itself. Are there going to be bumps in the road, absolutely.

BTW I have worked for a major cable company, and have done Direct tv, so I know the difference and I know the better product.

I can tell you that even on the Non-HD channels the FIOS is far far better than the cox cable it replaced. We used to have lost of interference on the cable, particularly on the low number channels, now every channel is clear as a bell. The reception with FIOS has to be at least five times better than it was with Cox.

But you PAY for that clarity and slight increase in speed.

Like I said until Verizon can truly make it worth my time I might switch. The minor amount of clarity on tv and the slight increase in internet speed will never justify the cost.

"Make it cheaper and they will buy."

It's actually cheaper than most cable companies. Everyone I know who has got it was suprised to see how much their bills went down. The internet is considerably faster.

If you don't have it, how can you knock it?

I'm paying less now with Verizon for my Cable/internet/phone service that I used to pay with Cox. Better service at less coast is a winner in my book. You want to pay for more for substandard service, that is certainly your perogative.

Last post here was over a year ago, but I wanted to see if people's feelings about FIOS were generally the same. We just got it. A little bit of an ordeal getting the cable run and everything up and running, but it seems fine. The folks at the cable company were downright nasty when we called to cancel service with them and told both my wife and then me that we were not going to save money and would end up paying more.

I'm still very happy with the FIOS and we have it over 1 year now.
