View Full Version : I heard a rumor of another seal..... BasicPatrick 08-13-2007, 07:43 PM Yep, Word on the street is that there was another seal busted by a big shark, this time off South Beach. Raider Ronnie 08-13-2007, 07:44 PM Nice :jester: Slingah 08-13-2007, 07:49 PM that's it...I'm only going in up to my ankles :err: BigFish 08-13-2007, 07:54 PM This must be why they call them "Great"!:laugha: Tagger 08-13-2007, 07:55 PM I went to that oceantic center in Buzzards Bay Sat. to look at the Gibbs display they have there .. It was pretty nice .. started looking around and heard this young girl all bubbly, gushing how the seals don't migrate anymore and how they saved one last winter . :yak6: ... eat those seals sharky ... afterhours 08-13-2007, 07:59 PM sharks- 2 , seals- 0. Uncle Matt 08-13-2007, 09:26 PM Boo hoo the poor seals... Wimper wimper.... Skitterpop 08-14-2007, 12:43 AM I`m devastated :hee: Sluggoslinger 08-14-2007, 07:39 AM Pattrick, When did you hear this happened? I was out there on saturday at the beach most of the day and didn't hear anything about it. Mr. Sandman 08-14-2007, 07:50 AM Water temps 73 and there are seals around...what is wrong with this picture? The heard needs culling, no question. IMO GW sharks will become a lot more prevalent inshore as the seal/warm water cocktail does. GW's will see monomoy as the equivalent of a Mojito Bar during the summer. It is just a matter of time before they pick off a bather as a snack. There was a mako at the hooter the other day. I heard guys tried to bait it but no luck. stripersnipr 08-14-2007, 08:06 AM If a second attack has occurred the efforts to downplay/deny it should be hysterical. Pete_G 08-14-2007, 10:04 AM We have seals in Newport right now as well. Bring on the GW's... striperman36 08-14-2007, 10:36 AM Haven't seen any in Westport yet. But haven't seen much in the way of fish either fishbones 08-14-2007, 11:21 AM Karl, thanks for the info. This might be bad for tourism, but good for fishermen if enough of them can be wiped out or scared off. Just keep in mind that if you are fishing and see seals up on the beach, don't go in the water. They have been conditioned to get up on shore when there are sharks around. 2boxers 08-14-2007, 11:42 AM WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that rocks likwid 08-14-2007, 11:55 AM Karl, thanks for the info. They have been conditioned to get up on shore when there are sharks around. And the Naushon incident should have taught everyone that you are NOT safe in knee/waist deep water. MAC 08-14-2007, 12:13 PM There is an old saying about a shark being able to kill ya in 3' of water........ Mike P 08-14-2007, 01:30 PM If a second attack has occurred the efforts to downplay/deny it should be hysterical. Personally, I can't wait to see Lisa Capone's soft shoe on this one. The harbormaster's comments about a "seal graveyard" kind of fly in the face of what she was spewing last week, ya think? ;) 2na 08-14-2007, 01:50 PM I'm giggling like a schoolgirl!! "Despite the sightings, there's no sign that more great whites are trolling for seals along area waters than usual, scientists and Cape officials have said recently. Thanks to federal and state laws that protect them and storm-generated waves that have filled in popular feeding grounds over the past year, gray seals are plentiful up and down the Chatham coast right now, and their main predators are great white sharks and killer whales." Here's the whole text: http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070814/NEWS11/70814012 They need to move about 20 miles north. 2 down, 2,000 to go. tattoobob 08-14-2007, 03:30 PM well if there has been 2 that has been witnessed I am sure that there are more than they are leading onto, they like to keep the public in the dark. and if no one saw it we wouldn't even know about the attacks. there lips are "sealed" If they are calling So. Beach "a seal grave yard" I am willing to bet a Plug that there has been alot more Slipknot 08-14-2007, 04:23 PM :bgi: :bgi: :bgi: :bgi:  well that's a start:soon: the seals are out of control and something needs to be done to get them out of here during the summer/spring and fall. They have diseased pleasant bay, it's a fact. I for one do NOT enjoy swimming in seal infested waters much less fish for bass among them. They need to move on. Some scientist needs to give them all that dog distemper sickness that can and will do a good job thinning the herd. I have heard of killer whales attacking them in the recent past, also great whites have been eating seals around Chatham for years now, it's just that it's more publicized this year because of all the witnessing, they can't squash it like they have in the past. striperman36 08-14-2007, 04:28 PM I think I am going to not let my kid in the water south of the cape this year on vacation massmike 08-14-2007, 07:30 PM When the sharks chase the seals up on the beaches, the coyotes take over--last Sept. we saw it happen near Head of the Meadow --a small seal and two coyotes tearing it to pieces at night...mother nature at her finest! Adam_777 08-14-2007, 08:44 PM I have made a short video from footage from Deep Blue.Added a little metallica to the background and put it on the web for the non seal lovers to enjoy. All I can say is Killer Whales attacking on the beach.Promise you'll like video even if you hate metallica.:point: :point: :rotf3: http://www.bandit.vers2.com/Stuff/Killer%20Whale.WMV :rocketem: :gf: JamesJet 08-14-2007, 08:48 PM That area has been full of them for years and its time people besides fisherman realize that they are a problem. If they are "bringing in great whites" and that is a problem then hopefully they (the non fishing public) will do something to thin the herd. That beach has some amazing structure and the seals just keep the larger fish and many small fish away from shore. As for Orcas is it true they fed on seals and bloodied up town cove a few years back? TheSpecialist 08-14-2007, 09:19 PM "The seals could bite them," Smith said. "Shark or no shark, it's not a good idea. You have the whole ocean to swim in and it's easy to find a place where you won't be swimming with seals. "And that avoids the chance, which is probably pretty remote, that you'll encounter sharks." This quote came from an August 10 story, like swimming 200 yards, 1/4 mile, or a mile away from seals is going to make a differance. Someone on the public payroll does'nt have cable..... :devil2: Slipknot 08-15-2007, 05:27 AM not only that Bill, but you can't find many places along the beach where there are NOT seals, they pop up all along the shoreline. Time to do something, they have been out of control for too long now:wall: UserRemoved1 08-15-2007, 05:40 AM Dood thanks for posting that! You just made my morning :grins: I very HIGHLY recommend this download :rotf2: I have made a short video from footage from Deep Blue.Added a little metallica to the background and put it on the web for the non seal lovers to enjoy. All I can say is Killer Whales attacking on the beach.Promise you'll like video even if you hate metallica.:point: :point: :rotf3: http://www.bandit.vers2.com/Stuff/Killer%20Whale.WMV :rocketem: :gf: 2na 08-15-2007, 06:34 AM Fan-tastic Adam!! - what a great way to start the morning. 2na 08-15-2007, 06:38 AM Thanks Karl - I would imaging if there were to be an attack on a swimmer they would turn around and kill every shark, not seal, that they could find. I like the guy's comment comparing them to nuisance deer. 2na 08-15-2007, 07:00 AM Here's a related article from the Herald - it says don't go swimming when there are seals around. This should go over big. http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=1017267&srvc=home I like the part where the owner of a hotel says the seals gotta go. His facts are crazy (he says seals eat their weight in fish each day, and they only eat the fish's stomach), but his point about the seals is correct. "False but accurate". Where have I heard that ??? Brother Brian 08-15-2007, 08:27 AM That video was GREAT. It was predator porn at its best ! Adam_777 08-15-2007, 08:34 AM That video was GREAT. It was predator porn at its best ! I threw it together quick but still find myself watching again and again.I knew a few guys in here would appreciate it!:kewl: Sluggoslinger 08-15-2007, 10:07 AM Does anyone here have experience and gear for shark fishing? We can take my boat this weekend off chatham? You bring the gear and knowledge and i'll supply the boat and fuel. 2na 08-15-2007, 10:48 AM I know what you can use as bait - bring a shovel. MakoMike 08-15-2007, 11:24 AM I have the gear, but I doubt you have a rod holder big enough to hold it! :) Sluggoslinger 08-15-2007, 11:28 AM Bringing it to the side of a 22' mako might be a little sketchy but it would be one hell of a story... JohnR 08-15-2007, 11:46 AM THAT WAS A TAILSLAP!!!!! 2na 08-15-2007, 11:48 AM very good John!! ThrowingTimber 08-15-2007, 11:51 AM There is an old saying about a shark being able to kill ya in 3' of water........ they need 6 inches of water above their total height to Maintain FULL mobility. So theyre still mobile in like no water, just not fully mobile until they get a bit of water above them. Rockport24 08-15-2007, 12:28 PM aren't great whites protected? like the seals? Sluggoslinger 08-15-2007, 12:42 PM aren't great whites protected? like the seals? "We were chumming for BFT and it took our bait so once we got it about 30 feet from the boat we cut the line" Adam_777 08-15-2007, 12:53 PM THAT WAS A TAILSLAP!!!!! Yeah you could put a parachute on that last one! :biglaugh: 2na 08-15-2007, 12:53 PM Rock - right on both counts. A few years back there was one summer where an immature bald eagle (protected) up at Race Point learned how to tear the plover (protected) enclosures apart to get at the tasty chicks inside. Rumor was that Audobon had video. That must have broke their hearts. JohnR 08-15-2007, 01:53 PM I remember that.... :uhuh:.. they didn't know who to root for... But our access still paid for it. That's where they have the last laugh... Slingah 08-15-2007, 04:22 PM that video was the nuggets...thanks, it made my day :claps: RIROCKHOUND 08-15-2007, 04:36 PM "We were chumming for BFT and it took our bait so once we got it about 30 feet from the boat we cut the line" No offense Slinger, but just leave them along IMHO, why screw with them. let them eat the seasl and we'll all be happy Finaddict 08-15-2007, 04:48 PM If any of you guys know Captain Lenny Mofo, he's a flats guide down in the Lower Keys around Big Pine Key ... he was out fishing when he saw a tiger shark come up to a sand bar, it was trapped in a small pool and it shimmied over the sand bar on its pectoral fins and back into the channel on the other side ... that's pretty freaky. :conf: they need 6 inches of water above their total height to Maintain FULL mobility. So theyre still mobile in like no water, just not fully mobile until they get a bit of water above them. MAC 08-15-2007, 05:32 PM I know what you can use as bait - bring a shovel. Don't need a shovel. Just bring a club with a spike in the end of it. Fresh bait is best:grins: JohnR 08-15-2007, 05:37 PM I wonder if Big Dave could cast a seal  Sluggoslinger 08-16-2007, 08:06 AM More in the globe today http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2007/08/16/chathams_accidental_tourist/ vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
