I went to that oceantic center in Buzzards Bay Sat. to look at the Gibbs display they have there .. It was pretty nice .. started looking around and heard this young girl all bubbly,gushing how the seals don't migrate anymore and how they saved one last winter . :yak6: ... eat those seals sharky ...

When did you hear this happened? I was out there on saturday at the beach most of the day and didn't hear anything about it.

Water temps 73 and there are seals around...what is wrong with this picture? The heard needs culling, no question. IMO GW sharks will become a lot more prevalent inshore as the seal/warm water cocktail does. GW's will see monomoy as the equivalent of a Mojito Bar during the summer. It is just a matter of time before they pick off a bather as a snack.

There was a mako at the hooter the other day. I heard guys tried to bait it but no luck.

If a second attack has occurred the efforts to downplay/deny it should be hysterical.

We have seals in Newport right now as well. Bring on the GW's...

Haven't seen any in Westport yet. But haven't seen much in the way of fish either

Karl, thanks for the info. This might be bad for tourism, but good for fishermen if enough of them can be wiped out or scared off. Just keep in mind that if you are fishing and see seals up on the beach, don't go in the water. They have been conditioned to get up on shore when there are sharks around.

And the Naushon incident should have taught everyone that you are NOT safe in knee/waist deep water.

well if there has been 2 that has been witnessed I am sure that there are more than they are leading onto, they like to keep the public in the dark. and if no one saw it we wouldn't even know about the attacks. there lips are "sealed" If they are calling So. Beach "a seal grave yard" I am willing to bet a Plug that there has been alot more

the seals are out of control and something needs to be done to get them out of here during the summer/spring and fall. They have diseased pleasant bay, it's a fact. I for one do NOT enjoy swimming in seal infested waters much less fish for bass among them. They need to move on. Some scientist needs to give them all that dog distemper sickness that can and will do a good job thinning the herd.
I have heard of killer whales attacking them in the recent past, also great whites have been eating seals around Chatham for years now, it's just that it's more publicized this year because of all the witnessing, they can't squash it like they have in the past.

When the sharks chase the seals up on the beaches, the coyotes take over--last Sept. we saw it happen near Head of the Meadow --a small seal and two coyotes tearing it to pieces at night...mother nature at her finest!

That area has been full of them for years and its time people besides fisherman realize that they are a problem. If they are "bringing in great whites" and that is a problem then hopefully they (the non fishing public) will do something to thin the herd. That beach has some amazing structure and the seals just keep the larger fish and many small fish away from shore.

As for Orcas is it true they fed on seals and bloodied up town cove a few years back?

not only that Bill, but you can't find many places along the beach where there are NOT seals, they pop up all along the shoreline.

I would imaging if there were to be an attack on a swimmer they would turn around and kill every shark, not seal, that they could find. I like the guy's comment comparing them to nuisance deer.

Here's a related article from the Herald - it says don't go swimming when there are seals around. This should go over big.

I like the part where the owner of a hotel says the seals gotta go. His facts are crazy (he says seals eat their weight in fish each day, and they only eat the fish's stomach), but his point about the seals is correct.

Does anyone here have experience and gear for shark fishing? We can take my boat this weekend off chatham? You bring the gear and knowledge and i'll supply the boat and fuel.

they need 6 inches of water above their total height to Maintain FULL mobility. So theyre still mobile in like no water, just not fully mobile until they get a bit of water above them.

A few years back there was one summer where an immature bald eagle (protected) up at Race Point learned how to tear the plover (protected) enclosures apart to get at the tasty chicks inside. Rumor was that Audobon had video. That must have broke their hearts.

If any of you guys know Captain Lenny Mofo, he's a flats guide down in the Lower Keys around Big Pine Key ... he was out fishing when he saw a tiger shark come up to a sand bar, it was trapped in a small pool and it shimmied over the sand bar on its pectoral fins and back into the channel on the other side ... that's pretty freaky. :conf:

Don't need a shovel. Just bring a club with a spike in the end of it. Fresh bait is best:grins:
