I'm looking for dates and suggestions for having all Four S-B C&R "Legs"

Dates other than the MS Surf Club Challenge in Rhody and the S-B Cuttyhunk Trip.

Also looking for suggestions to the tourney to shake things up a bit :btu: - Additional Locations are a possibility too :hee:

Thanks!

John

We did have 2 in spring, 2 in fall but there was low interest in spring...

I'm thinking 2 in Mass (1 M&Ds, 1 Cape or North SHore), 1 Rhody, and one Long Island / MTK or 1 Vineyard, or 2 Rhodys .... To switch things up...

I like the idea of spreading it out. Cape Ann Has lots of access before Memorial Day and after Labor day and plenty of places to stay. Same for Montauk . There's a state park right on the point for camping or self contained vehicles. And theres good fish there until late November. I'm heading down in Sept and Oct and I can grab some info on lodgings. How about a Block trip?

Would there be interest in a Block trip? BBQ followed by a Mad Island Dash, Breakfast with the Tattooed Hottie (She was last time I was there 6 years ago :hihi: ), and walk on the first am ferry Sunday morning back to Galilee?

I definitely don't want to lose the M&D's leg.

M&D's leg definitely in as long as Mike, Barb, & Felicia want it :lm:

IMHO if you start to involve a ferry you'll start to lose people who would want to come. I think more people would go if they could just hop in the car and go....just a thought.

There is no camping at Montauk Point State park. Only camping in Montauk is at the Hither Hills State park or at the Suffolk County park. You have to be resident to use the suffolk county park that is right on Shagwong Point. Ask away if you have any questions about Montauk. If you guys go over there, I might be tempted to run the boat over, its only 21 miles.

Take them to the Outer Cape. If they can catch there they can catch anywhere. Nothing like a challenge(s)

Seals
no bait
mung
no fish
closures for no reason
tourist
gangsta's
Little Brockton
drive bys
heroin on the streets of Orleans
You gotta be gay to be in politics in P-Town
etc. etc.

No wonder my wife wants to move

We'll still have the regular legs just looking for a little spice Leg too - this could be Block / Montauk / or NJ when the time is right - especially when we're petering out maybe us northerners will need to go south for once instead of them always coming up here :tooth:

John. tri state dates are weekend after labor day and last weekend in Oct. I'll keep those in mind but the dates I'm most concerned with are MS Tourney

So what's keeping you?

Ask away if you have any questions about Montauk. Late October, how to do Montauk on the cheap?

Late October, how to do Montauk on the cheap?

Drive over and sleep in your truck. Take a boat over and sleep on the boat. Seriously, lodging is probably the biggest part of the cost. Daunt's Albatross offers nice room for a resonable price, and there are several other places that are just as good, Stay away from the beachfront places. Food, you can eat cheaply at John's Drive in or the Chinese place in Town. The pizza place in town also has good italian food reasonably priced. October can be crowded out there with the surfcasters.

The leg is usually a one day/nite event.
Montauk or Jersey is a weekend trip whereas the Block is a short trip from Galilee (sp).
Never been to Montauk or Jersey, maybe a limo bus trip like the one we didn't have last year.

Best way to do Montauk from RI is to ride the ferry from New London to orient point then the shelter Island ferry from orient to Shelter and Shelter to hampton. Its $88 round trip on the new london ferry and$10 each side on the shelter island ferry. so I guess thats $128 for the ferrys. When i went in the late 80's and early 90's , you could not sleep in your car. You would have a staty on your case in an hour. Only option besides the hotels was for self contained vehicles right in the parking lot at the Point or regular camping at heather hills (which may be closed very late in the season) or rent a house , etc.

i used to eat and drink at the Shagwong Cafe. that's a real cool place worth seeing , especially late night. They also have a huge Marlin on the wall which was locally caught.

I fished there every thanksgiving weekend for years. the fishing is great then and even into December. I fished form Turtle cove to Shagwong point. Got good fish there even when a keeper had to be 36 inches. Rigged eels never worked better than at Montauk in late november.

Anyway , its a great place for late fall fishing but not easy to get to and IMO , on the expensive side.

I stand corrected , But Hither hills isn't that far away and I've had some pretty good fishing there . Cross sound ferry from New London is $44 then I take the ferry from Greenport to Shelter island and then the ferry to North Haven and Its about 25 miles to Montauk. I have a place in Noyack that sleeps six . Theres also some killer squeteage fishing in shelter island sound in the fall. I'll have more info in a couple of weeks.

... for shake ups

Have teams of 4, either picked from a hat or formed privately or privately formed pairs pairs picked from a hat to form teams of 4. Have each "team" contribute I dunno 5 or 10$ per person to buy whatever prizes are deemed appropriate. Have lure package prizes for 1st place team and 2nd place team and another prize for largest bass overall. Each team can enter 4 fish (1 per person) per week and as usual it's all C&R. This will take some of the pressure off john to come up with the prize $$ and will make things a little more interesting... I think anyway. Locations and dates... why not make the fisihing window a week instead of a weekend? and have the cookouts at the end of each week? Do Week of 9/9 for the East end of the Canal North, Week of 9/23Cape/Islands/SE Mass, Week of 10/7 for Rhode Island and then a Wildcard Week for 10/28-11/3 Fish anywhere you want. Team with longest total inches (I'm talking fish here you jokers) wins. Good, bad, ugly?

Last time I was there I fished with Slip and he caught bluefish and bass, on plugs that afternoon I fished with rapping mikey or next to him I landed 2 nice keepers the evening I caught a dozen Bluefish
then the next day Sunday I caught two more keepers. My friend I was with had a total of 9 keeper bass with the biggest being 41 inches. So I know for a fact there are fish you just need to know where and how to catch them.

Winter Island might work for a central North Shore location where camping, boat launch, etc. are available. NEKF holds its annual Shootout there.http://www.salemweb.com/winterisland/

Also Salem sights and history could pacify wifey and family members........ Salem is a good central meeting spot from which you could hit Plum Island to the north or Nahant to the south, and everything in between.

The Dad Fisherman

30 minutes to PI, 30 minutes to Cape Ann, 20 minutes to Nahant......Very centrally located. and the fishing is pretty good right off of winter island

I like your thinking:bl:

Another option for Montauk, if you don't need a vehicle over there is to take the high speed ferry to Block Island (which goes into new harbor). Walk over to Champlins and catch the Viking ferry to Montauk. Whoever said that its illegal to sleep in your car is correct, its also illegal to sleep on the beach. With so many roads and so much beach its impossible to enforce unless your sleeping in the middle of town.

If you're going to drive the ferry from New London to Orient is the only way to go, saves about 250 miles. You don't have to take the ferries onto and off of shelter island, you can drive west to Riverhead and then drive back out the south fork.

Shagwong Inn is must visit, at least for a drink. dinner there is a little pricy, but good. Other "must see" places are the Memory Motel, right in town, where the Rolling Stones wrote the song of the same name. Liar's Saloon up in the harbor area. Of course the Lighthouse itself, which is now a museum. If you walk west on the south side into Camp Hero, you can discover all kids of creepy places where the anti-aircraft guns and later missles used to roll out onto the beaches.

There is lots and lots of fishy beaches out there on both the north and south shore. If you go don't be afraid to check out some of the less "well known" places. I've seen bass and blue blitz the beaches on the north shore of Hither Hills state park, but you need a truck to get in there. Shagwong point is another good beach to try. You can get there by walking down the taxiway of the airport and then climb the dunes at the end.

Newport for a Rhody Leg?

If we have one Rhody leg this year (and its looking that way) I think it will be at the usual haunts for South County / Watch Hill as that is usually better than NPT in the later stage of time. Not to say we shouldn't look at NPT for the next year though the NPT guys might get pi$$ed :bl2:

OK - Potential Dates to avoid some of the other Tourneys:

North Shore September 22 - Location TBD

Cape Leg September 29 - Location M&Ds (with the OK from Mike & Barb)

Rhody Leg October 6th - Location King Cove Outfitters (extra people will be in town for PB07 :hee: )

Montauk or Jersey Leg - Date & Location TBD

Getting late for planning a North Shore Leg... Maybe next year?

Maybe Next year - seeing that a lot of the North Shore requesters can't make it on the potential North Shore Leg :buds:

OK - M&Ds is good - Day before StriperFest :hee:

We'll have the other "Mass Leg" on Cuttyhunk seeing that there will be so many S-B'ers there at the time ;) this weekend :hee:

I think we should stick with October 6 for Rhody as that is a good time to have a leg and lots of pluggers will be around earlier in the day with a second option of a later cookout if they choose ;)
