OK.. i'm seriously considering grabbing a nice spinning reel before heading to RI in Oct. I want a drag that can take a good splashing and i don't want something super heavy...

Right now i'm between a saltiga surf 4500 and a shimano sustain 8000... if i go inexpensive, i'll get a spheros 8000.

rod is an AFAW uptide (10'9 rated 2-5) and line will be 20 - 30# fireline.. uses will be all sorts of pluggages, especially topwater and large tins for stripers and blues..

After having repaired numerous Sustains due to water damage (interior corrosion), I would recommend the Spheros. The Sustains just are not worth the cost in my opinion. You can get a Spheros and other necessary tackle for the same money and be better equipped.
Have no experience with the Saltiga, so have no opinion on those.

i love the solid feel of the spheros, but was wondering about the casting distance, given the short spool.. thoughts?

A buddy of mine picked up a saltiga surf this year. Amazingly light and very smooth. Hasn't really put it to the test but it is starting to feel a little funny on the downstroke of the spool.

Spheros is a great real - I have seen some pitting on my spool but that is probably my fault for not rinsing enough. I have caught my share of fish and spent serious time with it on a 1205 and on a Ben Doerr, its not too heavy which is nice. Great for the money and just solid all around. casting distance is fine and it handle braid very well. I use PP 30 but have not tried fireline so I cant comment on that.

Spheros.Have a 1st year 8000 and still going strong after many seasons.You really can't go wrong with a Spheros.

I would also suggest the Quantum Boca.

I have been fishing a spheros for 3 seasons now and love it. Put the old style baitrunner handle on it and rinse every one and a while and it will handle getting wet. I have been fishing in a wetsuit though as of late and don't know how much longer it will last. Oh well I have got my moneys worth out of it.

I was out for tuna with a Guide who used a spheros tricked out with a stella drag, handle and gears. cost him 80.00 to do the upgrade. Says it was a great reel.
