Last night we saw what LOOKED like herring in the shallows. Same profile as herring, definitely NOT bunker. Any ideas on what it could be? We didn't think and herring would be around this late... Any ideas???

most likely hickory shad. they are in the inlets and beach fronts from summer - fall.

Not herring, but I can't believe how thick the silversides have been along the shore this week. No bass though :zup:

Not too early for Mullet. usually 9/10 to 9/15 in Weakapaug.
I'd say Mullet

BTW, 6" Broken back bomber in Chicken Scratch color is killer when the Mullet are in.

These looked to be 8-10" long. Bigger than mullet.

Every bluefish I've caught in the past week down my way has been coughing up 3"-5" herring.

they were not mullet or snappers that I know for sure.Have seen plenty of alwives before and would say that these to were alwives all of 8"to 10" easy. The only thing that makes me doubt it is the time of year.Maybe someone opened a pond or closed stream?Maybe they were very small shad?as odd as it is I still think herring.

Chef,
at a spring squid spot?
We used to be able to fill a bucket with tinkers, snappers and sea herring there as a kid/teenager.... havent seen tinkers in years....
great supply of fluke bait.

guess they could have been herring?
Heard rumors of sardines around as well.

No over near you. Got a bunch of tinkers where your thinking the past few falls, there still there.
