Respooling my reel for the weekend on Cuttyhunk with the boys, and the fall run. I prefer PowerPro on this reel, so that is not the discussion here.
My question is; my local shop only had 30# and 80#, nothing inbetween. 30# has given me windknots, so that is out. Is there anything wrong with going up to 80#??? I usually use 50#. I don't think the 80 will reduce casting distance significantly, but want to hear if I have not considered something.

They have to have 50 at sports authority or #^&#^&#^&#^&s. If not they will have it at boaters world. 80# is too much. 30 too little.

i know that #^&#^&#^&#^&s has 40. that is my favorite

80 is like cable compared to 50. If you're used to 50 on light lures I think you'll be VERY disappointed.

Ugh. Will have to transfer over to an empty spool....it will get used somewhere, he only charged me ten bucks. Hey, you gotta try to support your local B&Ts right? Something else for the to do list tomorrow....

i saw it in action and switched over. i am very confident with my 50lb power pro. and very comfortable with it.

my friends use it too. the other day my friend switched to something else.. to try it out.. it frayed and snapped constantly. lost almost 150yrds of snag ups in one day.. where as the power usually holds up and turns the rock over or breaks the stuff attached to it. (leaders, clips, hooks hell even the rod if you arent careful) i got snagged as many times and got everything back.

it does fray.. but no where near as much as i expected.i very rarely re rig DUE to fraying. and i fish alot of rocky bottoms and "boulderous" areas. when i do decide to re rig or change things i will remove the frayed stuff. but it is only slight fraying that wouldnt concern me. but if im changing anyway. might aswell remove the possible kinks. i personally enjoy the diameter of the 50lb. its not to thin where it becomes razor wire while casting. and its not to thick to hinder it either. haven't had experience with the other sizes though. started using and i'm stuck with it.

thats just what i know from personal use. im sure other will have other stories.

if you are interested just give it a shot one of these days and if ya dont like it ya can always switch back.

I run a 704z and greenies bailess. I have no problems casting 1 1/2 oz plugs at all. the 50 is the best. 80 will pull the line off whan ya cast.
its not rock friendly and will snap if she rubs ya off. fire line will cut ya deep. so don't grab the line too haul up the blues or big bass.
too much line on the spool will make a mess too.
after 30 days respool.

I use 30# power pro I have very few problems I fish it on all my rods from 7" to 10" i use plugs from a half ounce to 3 ounces and a couple of fours.I lost 1 4 ounce plug casting because of a frey sliced my fingers a couple of times lifting a fish.I dont hink I would go any higher on the pound test unless I new how it cast light plugs.

Hose your reel with silicone spray. Cuts way down on wind knots, and thos that you do get come out easier.

I use 15 # and 30 # PP on my spinning setups and have no problems. Thats a good idea about the silicone though. Real good idea actually.

PowerPro and rocks don't mix.

Funny I get the windknots bad with 30lb pp.The 50 never rarely knots if ever.I think it depends on plugsize,plugweight,rod and reel.With the plugs I chuck mostly heavy most up to 3 the 50 works good with alot of action.A friend tuaght me emery cloth the lip on the spool a couple times a year I also cut the bail wire off and hand feed the reel so I can see and feel the loop of the death.

Since you're getting some new line for cutty you might as well treat yourself to some sufix 50#. Stuff is just amazing.

When you say hose your reel, do you put a lot of silicone on the line too or just the spool? I was wondering what the silicone would do to the line. Makes sense to lube it I can see where it would cut down on wind knots. I hate that.

i get about 30-40 yrds tossing an unweighted 9" sluggo. that includes the leader knot banging through my eyes. and not putting any extra "omph" behind the casts.

if i really whipped it out without the leader knot there.. probably around 60. if that helps ya out at all.

also.. if i just cast a 3oz weight.. forget about it. i'll lose sight of it till it splashes. (thats actually probably more helpful info)
