View Full Version : The Girl, or the Fish?

Another Girl down, but two keepers last night. I honestly don't know how anyone balances a relationship with striper fishing. It almost makes me think that I need to get rid of one to have the other. I am a good boyfriend, from November through June, but that apparently buys me no leeway the rest of the year. So for now it is the fish, but I will totally regret it come december...........the girl of my dreams weighs 60lbs and has stripes...

Consider yourself lucky .A nice no strings atatched relationship that can just end like that is a blessing in disguise.Toss a kid in the mix a shared checking account and a house full of things then tell her your going out fishing all night.I have to heed the warnings and play by ear alot.Try doing little nice things early in the day to upset the night fishing balance. It's hard work your better off single man.I'd trade you my plugbag to be single and able to fish anytime day or night without having to check or anything.I'm sorry you lost your girl, but there's schools of them out there and when it all boils down you'll have another one in the bucket in no time.

If she cannot support what you are passionate about you need to dump her because it will only lead to trouble in the long run.

Saying you're a good boyfriend from November to June is saying you're a bad boyfriend for 6 months of the year. My suggestion is either to find a woman who likes to fish 5 nights a week or learn to balance your life a little lest you find yourself old and alone one day. Unless you're getting paid to fish, you might want to ask yourself if you can reduce your fishing and still be happy. If not, so be it, but understand where you might be headed.

There aren't many women who are content to sit at home alone most of the time for 6 months.

Granted, there are some women who wouldn't be supportive of 1 or 2 nights a week either but I don't think it's unreasonable to find someone who whould be, as long as you can still make her feel like she's more important.

I like the scene early on in Casablanca when Rick dumps his beautiful girlfriend and Louie says, "You should not be so frivolous with women, Rick, you may find them in short supply one day."

my buddy's girl.. oh man. she has fishing radar. we can not do anything all day. second we settle in at a spot the phone starts ringin and its time to leave. EVERYTIME. and i mean EVERY TIME. even if we are supposedly "allowed" to fish that day. with in the first 5mins. the phone starts ringin and continues to do so until we leave.

my girl. likes to fish. so i'm all set.

depends on the girl. if you have to ask the question, go with the fish.

you have to find a balance. it's actually easier when you are just "dating" because you don't have to be accountable at all times, like when you are married. as some guys have mentioned, if a girl is not willing to accept that you are passionate about fishing and you need a few nights a week to do it, then you have to move on.
However, if you are fishing say, 6+ nights a week, you DO have to ask yourself what is more important to you.

My Dad did, he fished 4+ nights a week when he was in his late 40's and 50s. I think my Mom was conditioned since my Dad worked nights most of the early years of his marriage so it was not a big adjustment for her. She always cooked a big breakfast for him when we got back and had coffee ready.

I hear you. My girlfriend is pretty understanding. After I got a new job that was further from the city she let me move to Gloucester. I fish a few nights and go visit her a few times during the week. Weekends we take turns.

I got her to come out with a friend of mine and let her reel in the first fish. At the end of the night we're about to leave one of the rods goes off and she fights the bass for about 10 minutes. She got a nice 33" bass! I told her we can keep it or let it go. She chose to throw it back. I think she had a great time. I think this will help her understand "my problem" too

Same here!We oughta start a club for the unlucky ones.Mine gets mad if I want to go out fishing late at night, early in the morn, mid day or anytime. It is ok for me to sit at home on my pc for countless hours or on the couch by myself for hours. As soon as the word fishing pops up it's like a switch gets flipped.Sux I think she just hates t see me happy

How old are you? If you are, say under 30, and not really into starting a family, then enjoy your freedom. If you are at the point in your life where you are ready to set other priorities, then be ready to put fishing in the proper order of importance. It isn't fair to expect anyone to be involved in a relationship with someone who is out at ungodly hours 5 days a week for 6 months. Maybe you will find someone like that, but it is a rarity. If you don't want to cut back, then you probably need to accept the bachelor life and enjoy cause at some point things will likely change. Maybe it will be out of your system a bit.

i love being young and stupid.. my top 5 priories in order..

1. air.
2. food.
3. fishing.
4. girls.
5. money (mostly for fishing)

sorry ladies.. but when i was a kid.. you made fun of me and wouldn't look my way. i've kissed more fish between the ages of 5 and.. hell, till now. then the amount of girls in all my high school classes. (who was the guy on tnn back in the day, that use to kiss every fish?)

therefor.. fish win. not too mention going through all the trouble of landing a fish and then letting it go is a hell of a lot more fun then it is with women. plus dinner for a fish cost a lot less. $5-20 and ya can use the same dinner over and over. :spin:

p.s.- note to self.. never let my girl see these forums..

then when she started calling the plugs "cute" i realized it was no place for her. She made an effort though.

take as many as you can until you find the right one . I fish when ever I want and no one says no or Id rather you didnt .
My wife also hates me which helps ............................

she knows its best to let me go than not too .

36+ years of fishing , 24 years of marriage with 2 girls 9 and 13 .

in the last 3 years I have been to alaska 12 days , key west 4 days , maine 6 days and all I have to do is take them to block island for 7 days .

they are out there but not easy to find in a crowd .

I am 27. Its not so much how often I fish, it is more of the fact that if I get it in my mind that the tide is right or some hunch makes me think it is time, there is nothing stopping me from going. My girl always liked to fish with me, but when I turned it up a notch and it went from saturday afternoons, to thursday through monday all-nighters, I lost her. I am at the point in my life where I just want to do what I want to do for a while, and nothing makes me feel better than fishing. I don't even really know what it is exactly, it just feels like I am SUPPOSED to go, like I'm being called to the ocean.

Maybe I'll grow out of it.

If you find a high degree of fulfillment in fishing, then it's worth it. If fishing fills a spiritual void, it's worth it. If fishing defines you - like it does some - then it's worth it.
It's very possible that fishing won't do it for you - that you'll pass through fishing after a time and find that while you enjoy it - it's just a pastime.
Truth is, for most people, fishing is just fishing. They take it and practice it on face value. There is nothing wrong with being a more casual fisherman. Everything does not have to be over-the-top. It's possible to have a girl and go fishing. I'd think carefully before I tossed a twenty something year-old woman out in favor of a stinky fish - particularly so close to the end of the season.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your girlfriend, you should console yourself by not concentrating on her and what you lost, and try to focus your attention on some other pursuit - like fishing like a madman for the next couple of months.

This thread has given me a new appreciation of my wife. I just had a week off and did 3 nights and days of fishing. She did not complain and we have quite a bit of 'projects' around the house (and her birthday to boot). She really does not seem to mind my trips in the early morning hours and even gives me the go ahead for occasional weekend long fishing trips with a buddy of mine. She even gave me the go ahead for the tin boat purchase and went into a store last week near her work to try and buy me a rod that I wanted. She will even go fishing on occasion with me (fresh and saltwater).

Actually, one of my old girlfriends was really into flyfishing and we did that quite a bit, so these women do exist, you just have to search around a bit to find them.

while on the subject..

i sort of have an odd dilemma..
my girls grandfather used to take her all the time. so she wants to come out with me. which i am all about. we havent gone yet, cause it's a semi long distance relationship (north shore vs south shore) and honestly.. there a much better ways to the spend the time when we do see each other. heres the thing. i don't intend on letting her be the one of a life time that got away. so once we do see each other more often.. that means more time to fish together more often..

now i'm getting ahead of myself here.. but what if she wants to go EVERY time? i'm kind of afraid of that. i mean it's not a terrible thing. but fishing is my man time... i'm not so sure i want my girlfriend looking over my shoulder when i'm telling dirty jokes about fishing.. you know the jokes of which i speak...

Who needs therapy when you have a forum of instant wisdom and salted advice? Seriously, obviously fishing was not the dealbreaker, but the fact that I would much rather go fishing than hang around with her had a major role in deciding that maybe she wasn't the one for me. I do know that there is someone out there for me, and when I meet her, I will put her first, but if I can't do that now, it is better to throw her back, we will both be much happier.

I know the day will come, when I walk down the bike path, and among the rocks of the canal, will stand a vision from the heavens, holding a 10' Lamiglas, with long flowing blond hair and a face like a goddess. We will become one with the green flowing water and will slay bass, side by side, into eternity.

Hows that for romance.

Circlehook, sounds like you got the fever in a bad way. My advice to you is that you go for it 100%, go as hardcore as you can for as long as you can as long as you have the gas in your tank, and do it until either you achieve your 60lb goal, you find that it is your life's calling to be a died in the wool surfman, or else you have a moment of truth when you ask yourself if there isn't something missing.

I did something like that, just told myself I was going to go as hard as I could until I hit the wall, went three+ years straight with fishing as no.1 and everything else on the back burner, and then something went click. Now, I'm still into it and think about it all the time, but I'm no longer ready to live out of my car for it...but there are days when I think what if...

The girl/fishing thing, the girl/booze thing, the girl/reading thing. Me, me, me. Total self-absorption. I learned a lot when we got divorced. I got rid of one out of three and learned to listen to someone other than myself. But it's fun being compulsive--the fishing world needs odd balls.

Good luck with finding her, Circlehook. You'll know when you meet the right girl. My wife my is best friend and miss her when we're not together. But, I still have a ton of fun when I go away with my buddies for the weekend. I like knowing that when I get home she'll be waiting for me. My wife is good with the fishing thing because she know it's important to me. But, she also knows that she and my son are most important to me. I just do my best to balance the two. I make sacrifices, but still probably get out more than a lot of people. I ended up giving up golf when I had a child because there is not enough time for 2 passions and a hobby. My family is #1 and fishing is #2, then if there is any time left over, it's sports on T.V., work around the house and cards with my friends. If I have any regret, it is missing out on a lot of good fishing when I was single because I was more interested in raising hell and chasing skirts than being out fishing in the middle of the night.

It took 13 years of Striper season, deer hunting, water foweling, fur trapping, ice fishing and Salmon fishing to drive my first wife away and to the nut house(not ALL my doing)... it took 6 years to find another one that is just plain glad when I leave....amazingly she's still happy when I get home...
