I use mostly live bait for stripers but want to get into lure fishing a little more. I have been using diamond jigs for about 3 years actually, and storm/tsunami swimbaits for maybe 1-2. And now I'm hearing about the Slug-Go. I used to fish these in freshwater for bass a lot (then I switched to the Zoom Super Fluke) and it looked good, but what is in your opinion the best color for stripers? And what jighead weight goes best with a 6" slug go? I've heard pink, alewife, etc. I fish the surf and on jetties by the way. Thanks in advance.

I have by far the most confidence with black. Weight of jig head really depends on the depth, current etc. I have used em on 3/4 oz up to 5 oz and they work on all.

My favorite color, night or day, rain or shine, is deffinately alewife.

If you want to just carry one color then alewife is the way to go, it's all you'll ever need. That said, I've also caught on white, black, arkansas shiner, and of course bubblegum. The bubblegum seems to work well on overcast days, maybe the fish can see it better. I also prefer the 7" model, but will use 4", 6", or 9" if conditions warrant. The 9" is real nice rigged with just an 8/0 shaughnesy hook, looks great darting around in the surf. For the 7" I've found a 3/4 oz. jig head works best for most situations that I encounter. You really can't go wrong, soft plastics just catch fish.:btu:

Pat - I thought you preferred ice shad above all.

I do allot of damage on alewife... Only because they sell them at WalMart and I can easily pick up a pack or three while shopping.

I fish pink all year and all day/night. I do also carry black with me and switch to it at night but have never caught a fish on it so I switch back to pink. I should give black more time as I feel my success with pink is because I fish it so often. I never fish Slug Gos with a jig head -I use other soft plastics for that.

With all that said I can't wait to find the new squid color.

Spring - White or Ice Shad
Summer - White, black, herring, alewife and arkansas shiner.
Fall - white, black, black ice, herring, alewife and arkansas shiner.

Days - I don't fish much during the day
Nights - overcast/moonless : black/dark colors
moonlit : white, ice shad, black ice (anything with
metallic flakes)

Depending on bait in the area, I try to "match the color and approx. size."
(I also bring a limited supply of swim shads as well.)

confirmed. black and pink. i recently had luck on pink with a bright moon in the sky.

White El Salt-o

When fishing anywhere that sandeels are in abundance, arkansas shiner is the killer color.

Pond Shinner for sand eel for me

Pink or bubble gum , gets them every time if there are stripers there, they will hit a pink sluggo....

chartreuse- hands down

I haven't tried all the colors, but for me, its:

1. Black
2. red shad
3. pink,
3.white.

I have a bunch of charteuse, but I usually just stick with black, red shad, then pink, and don't go much further than that.


I love mixing the colors. ( add white to a bag with red shad and you'll get the bleading effect.....NICE

BLACK-- I've tried most all of the flavors--- If I couldn't get black I'd use rainbow trout and red shad after dark and pink or white by day.

It seems obvious that there is no one "perfect" color, I think I counted t least 9 different colors above. As usual it all comes down to confidence in the lure more than the color. Although I have done very well with black at night I have also done really good on blue ice, which no one has mentioned.
When the "prefered colors" comes up I always find it interesting all the "absolute best" colors that people pronounce. Very interesting and enlightening, tells me that color doesn't really matter that much.
