View Full Version : Canvas shop??
macojoe 09-26-2007, 04:40 PM Does anyone know of a reasonable canvas shop?? I am on the Cape, but I can go off if I have to.
The Sea Ox came with a Bimini top and enclosure, But the Bimini is JUNK!
Side curtains in good shape just need cleaning.
The guy i went to today says he can't copy the Bimini and make it come out right, so I would have to buy all new $3000 :zup:
He said if he uses a frame he has there and buys a off the shelf Bimini and then makes the curtains it will be cheaper but did not have a price??
Hes going to call. On a good note his wife was HOT!!!!!!!!!!!:hf1:
teaser 09-26-2007, 08:12 PM should've asked her for her top! :laugha:
teaser 09-26-2007, 08:15 PM No seriously, there's a guy down my way that does real good work and I know for a fact he'd be able to use the old frame as long as that's in good shape. I could ask him for a ballpark figure if you have a pic of what you got. This guy does custom interiors for cars and boat tops only. If you have a pic post it and I can run by there in the morning and get a quote for you.
macojoe 09-26-2007, 09:57 PM I have no pic at this time, But I can get tomorrow. were are you located?
Thanks!
teaser 09-26-2007, 10:30 PM Dartmouth but the guy is in New Bedford on Cove Road.
Rick Ackley 09-27-2007, 06:05 AM Mac, I've been in the canvas trade some 38 years now. Making a new cover from an old one is tough. Sort of like building a house around a porch, but it can be done. A good frame is the key starting point for a new bimini, and any good stitcher should be able to fab your new top and have the existing sides and stern curtain still match. Unfortunatly, I no longer have the capabilities of doing this type of work anymore. Good luck.
macojoe 09-27-2007, 07:56 AM Thanks Rick, I have asked a few and they all say the same thing.
Looks like I am going to have to go all new, But not for $3000 :uhoh:
likwid 09-27-2007, 09:32 AM The NB guy is good, I know who teaser is talking about.
Call Steve Thurston at Quantum Sails in Bristol and get a quote from him also.

Right now I have a 22' center console but at the time (2 years ago) I had a 18' Sea Ray cuddy cabin and it was so tight that I had to open the back curtains to let the heat out .... in december! My set up was 3front panels that were removable but also zipped down to have breeze and get them out of the way. 2 side panels also the same as the front, and 3 full curtains on the back that would unzip and roll up or could be removed, I stored them in the cuddy when not in use. Also the top was brand new Sunbrella canvas with a new frame, all the windows were full clear heavy duty scratch resistant clear vinyl.
Hope this helps.
macojoe 09-28-2007, 04:08 PM Sounds like a nice set up!!
Did you get the number for the NB guy yet??

Joe, I will second the Keiths, they are good people and they do great work, I found them to be reasonable, but I just had maintenance performed on zippers, etc. They are local, Dennis. Worth a call before driving to NB.
As Hoop said, they are located in East Dennis, Sesuit harbor, They are very reasonable especialy over the winter. Tell billy the old long hair diesel mechanic sent you.

Sorry I had a late day guys but I got it to you as fast as I could.

Fish On 09-28-2007, 09:28 PM Joe,
Try this guy
Stitches Custom Upholstering 978 681 5051 24 S Broadway Lawrence, MA
He has redone a couple of panels for me and did a great job. He has quick turn around, does quality work and was very reasonable on price. I'm sure anyone that has used in the past would agree. I realize it may be a jont for you but high value work is worth the ride.
Good luck.
Keith

Then if need be I will ck out the other places.
