Do you guys stop throwing them once the day-time fishing picks up this time of year....or do you keep creeping around slinging them until they start to frost up.

I've been throwing more plugs lately and not slinging them....just wondering what everybody else thinks

All fall, unless weather/bluefish conditions warrant me to stop.
But I don't start day fishing until... well ever :D
Unless you count boat blackfishing...

They can be really good in the super late innings for Large fish. I'm talking mid November- Early December.

When they won't take eels at night any longer its time to hang the gear up for the season. Yes, you can get an occasional decent plug fish by day in the fall during the dawn/dusk periods, but the eel thing is still my fondation fishing as it is for many others.

Sling the eels until the fish are gone. There is no end of eel season , just end of fish being around.

Also , the later in the year , the more I prefer rigged eels to live eels. Gimme that extra hook!

NEVER give up on eels TDF, just follow Britney's rules....

Live eels work all the time all season anywhere a bass swims, they work well at night and they DO work well during the day...There is never really a bad time to toss eels

Never, 3-4 years ago I got fish on eels in january, yes at night.

When I get bored with them and it happens. I always end up going back to them at some point.;)

if anything, I tend to move more towards eels as the season gets later and later. colder water and hopefully bigger, more selective fish on the prowel. they do get boring at times, but then I catch a few nice fish and it reminds me of why I fish them. The strong single hook is also nice to be able to muscle fish in and release them unharmed.

I find this time of year it's easy to get lazy and not do the hardcore night eel-slinging thing because they ARE some fish to be had during the day. I have to keep reminding myself that if the fishing is good during the day, it's gonna be much better at night and large will are more likely to be around!

I can smell it now, this is becoming the good old eel fishers are dummys and plug fishers are geniuses thread.

I'll take bait on this one. You need to be able to do both or there are times when you wont catch when the well rounded surfcaster will. How much you do one or the other should be based on personal preferance and what you enjoy doing more.

Personally, I'll give the fish whatever it wants. Plugging would be my preference but I have no problem throwing rubbah, slinging eels, or chunking Herring.

Part of the challenge is figuring out what they want.....that is after you find them.

Also, sometimes a huge plug can cull out a bigger fish when your eels are being taken everytime as soon as they hit the water.

as Stevie Van Stall and #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& say at times, you can cast the paint off of most plugs and you won't do as well as you would with live eels

I have......many times. I fish with a guy who has taken seven 50lb bass from shore, mostly on eels. He usually fishes eels, I always fish plugs. I often "outfish" him, particularly when smaller (less than 20lbs) fish are around, but then I have never taken a 50 lb fish from shore, and can count the 40lb fish I've caught on one hand. I think there is a lesson there, but I can't figure it out, hence my screen name.

I stop slingin' eels once they freeze and I have to thaw them out in the water or until any shops around me stop carrying them or until I run out of frozen left over ones. Whichever comes later.

When I mean outfished I mean fish of size... I have seen people slaying fish under 20lbs on plugs while I am picking away at fish on eels. I am not really concerned about being outfished at that point.

after trying for a slob on a plug for the last 2-3 years...Im back to eels....manage a nice fish on a pencil a couple weeks back and went back to being slingah with the snakes..and guess what...they work marvelous...to each his own...

I like them both but when time is an issue it's easier to bring a few plugs and toss away rather than a bait shop run.After two years of fishing and not getting a keeper due to noobishness and Married with children I've got all my bass from shore on Plugs.A few on boats with pogies and eels.Everytime I get a few eels the fish know and they run far and fast because they know I haven't got a keeper yet and they want to make fun of me until I do.

Put the plugs away, and use the live eels. There is NO COMPARISON-None.

i agree, eels are solid.

but not good for me lately, spent fri nite on the east end from 11-2am slinging eels, nothing. then last nite, east end from 9-1am, 1 keeper. 1 fish, 6 hours. it is what it is, i guess

I wish those nights happened more often. I would much rather not use eels. Its alot of extra trouble. :rollem:

Thats why I normally dont use them, ussually just really late season.
