View Full Version : A question for the experts.
ilovetwofish 10-06-2007, 07:31 PM This place I fished the last 5 or 6 times at night, the bass and blues are busting chasing small bunker. I cant get them to hit anything in my box ive thrown needlefish and other poppers in different shapes sizes and color doesnt seem to matter.Me and my buddie are trying to come up with all kinds of reasons why there not hitting.I think the combination of all the bunker and (I think the fish exspecially the bass can see better at night) and wont chase anything that looks different then bunker.I wonder if they would hit a eel or snnapper blue.I would rather catch on a lure from the shore over bait. This area is only about 10 feet of water with a sandy bottom with eel grass along the shore.Any thoughts and ideas of certain lures and color and any info would be greatley appreciated. This is very frustrating when there is nice sized fish 20 feet from shore and they wont touch anything. I would be willing to share this spot with someone who might have any ideas or get together with you and fish this spot.
Much thanks.

ilovetwofish 10-06-2007, 07:44 PM Thanks tried them in 4,5,and 6 inch bunker mullet and pearl colors. With a teaser and still nothing.
Clammer 10-06-2007, 07:49 PM Easy >.live line the peanuts :::beat:
ilovetwofish 10-06-2007, 07:59 PM I thought of that haven't tried yet.I'm assuming you would snag them with a weighted trebbile hook but then what, take them of and rehook them to what kind of setup would you use how would you cast them keep in mind im fishing from shore.

fishaholic18 10-06-2007, 08:00 PM Try Storm Shads
Yup, thats what I'd try, maybe Bombers to
FishNH 10-06-2007, 08:04 PM small (but thick) tins
hopkins shorty
Pt Jude tins etc etc.
riverrat55 10-06-2007, 08:48 PM Try a chug bug popper (small) in silver black!!!
Retrive and pop in a slow fashion!!!
Good Luck!!!
I had many night like that in FI Inlet...almost to a tee
the only thing (and i threw the bag from small to large) they would touch was subsurface eel skin metal lip.
Hoever ,this spot has a wicked current which in my opinion makes the skin plugs really come into their own
ilovetwofish 10-07-2007, 05:10 AM Not to much of a current here.I wonder if they would leave the large number of bunker to hit a eel.I still would rather catch on a lure I will deffantely try some of these thanks again I will keep you all updated.
piemma 10-07-2007, 05:33 AM We have been into giant schools of Blues in Narr. Bay all week. They are on peanuts. My brother and I have been killing them on one of my plugs which is a Zarro Spook imitation in White and gray and Yellow and black. Fished slow on top walking the dog. Lures are about 3 to 4" long with a long white bucktail siwash on the back.
ilovetwofish 10-07-2007, 08:20 AM I love walking those spooks and have been doing very well with them in the day but at night the fish are there but not touching anything.

tangler 10-07-2007, 08:31 AM Been there , done that ...... Try a teaser next time ,also small jointed lures (like pikes ) sometimes will produce in that situation and as mentioned above "rubber baits" shads and mullets .
emgred 10-07-2007, 08:33 AM Try a Chicken Scratch Bomber or a small Metal lip swimmer. Fish the edges or behind the bait schools with a SLOW retrieve. Worth a shot. Also don't forget Sluggos.

you old B#$%^&*() / WTF does catching blues on top in the daylight have to do with trying to catch selective bass @ night that are feeding on tons of P/B >>..MIKEY:huh:
steve 10-07-2007, 09:57 AM Live eels.
stripersnipr 10-07-2007, 10:05 AM What JohnR and F18 said.
Clammer 10-07-2007, 11:22 AM NOPE ::
flyben24 10-07-2007, 12:55 PM i think ur best bet would be either 4" shad or snagging a peanut bunker and flinging it out there

Sorry. i thought he said blues. Old and brain dead that's me.
Adam_777 10-07-2007, 02:51 PM If you want them grab a rapala x-rap suspended Jerkbait.
http://www.rapala.com/products/luresdetail.cfm?modelName=x-rap&freshorsalt=Salt
Cast it out then wait and tug wait and tug wait and tug. You'll hook up.I found the school wouldn't touch anything on top today,no metals all lures they weren't even looking at.Tossed that x-rap out and grabbed 4 of the most monstrous blues you've seen in a while. The rear hook is now in line for replacement as it's bent bad from those animals.PM me I'll meet up with you and toss my collection at it.Have you tried pencil poppers?Big pencil poppers make alot of commotion and draws just about anything to it.I default back to my lucky lure pic below

FishermanTim 10-08-2007, 10:30 AM I'd suggest, depending on where you fish, trying 4 & 5 inch Slug-gos or Fin-S plastics on small jigheads, say 1/8 - 1/4 oz.
It's a case of trying to "match the hatch".
Pete F. 10-08-2007, 04:52 PM Casting egg and a jig
I know it works cause I watched a guy catch fish while I got skunked yesterday morning.
Backbeach Jake 10-08-2007, 04:57 PM Try Storm Shads
And take the plastic guards off the hook..:hidin:
ilovetwofish 10-08-2007, 07:09 PM Well after two more frustrating nights of fish and no hits trying everything in my bag I made up my mind im taking out the yak out Thursday night and drifting eels even though I'm not crazy about being out by myself in the dark on the yak if anyone wants to join me P.M. me.This spot is somewere in between North kingstown and warick. If you do want to come you have to sign a legal document you will not tell anybody else about the spot just kidding but it is a small area for fishing from the shore if you are from the area im sure you no of it, its just myself and 4 or5 regulars that go there.
