has anyone ever made a stink about the actual team called the indians with the drunken happy red face man for an emblem...

just came to me while jacoby, a navajo native american was up at bat.

Thats got to be the most glaring racist item going in sports these days. well there are the braves and redskins too. :faga:

Should I get upset about a team called the Vikings? If not, what is the difference?

They were pressured hard to change the Logo and they flat out refused. Good for them.

This topic was an article in the globe a few weeks back -

"a member of the Cleveland organization asked him(Jacoby) about the logo when the team was thinking of drafting the Oregon State product in the first round two years ago.

"They asked me if I would be offended or anything like that if they had taken me," said the quiet Ellsbury, a member of the Colorado River Indian Tribes. "I said it was fine, but I thought that was nice on their part."

This topic gets way out of line. The town I grew up in, our high school was the Blue Devils. There was a movement at the time to get the name changed. The feeling was the blue devil name was the cause for all the horrible motor vehicle deaths that were occuring back then. ( It had nothing to do with driving under the influence)
The proposed name change would have been the pink angels.
I think the way the teams has been playing recently, pink angels may suit them just fine.

I can see how the logo could be taken as racist.

Those PC folks are just trying to sweep the Native peoples under the rug altogether. Keep them unseen and forgotten. I think that teams that remember these people in their mascots are actually doing them a service by tribute. Really, how often would we utter the word Indian or Brave or Redskin or Chief without these teams? Next to never.

I can see how the chief can be considered insensitive. The little picture above shows it pretty well. I am relatively pc in general, but still wear my Indians hat. As an aside, my inlaws lived on the Navajo reservation while my mother inlaw was in the public health service. My wife was born on the res. The kids on the res. played Navajos and Indians. Also, chief Jim Billy of the seminole tribe said at a concert I attended on his res. "i am native american and if you were born here so are you." Great sentiment and well put, I thought...

Not sarcasm at all, just irony. The cartoon is a little much IMHO.

What is racist about it? It's a caricature of an American Indian. So what? Seems to me the fact that they call themselves the Indians is an acknowledgement of respect.

How come nobody seems to be bothered on St. Patty's day when everybody dresses up as a leprachaun, Pounds down Boiled Potatoes by the truckload , and is pounding beer like nobody's business.

or that twinkle-toed little dude peddling his "Magically Delicious" marshmallows as a healthy breakfast for kids.

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame have a Leprachaun as a symbol...and as a mascot. The Celtics have a Leprachaun as there Symbol.

You know why it doesn't bother people....because its no big deal, thats why. Its just a sports team logo. My God people need to relax.

lets not forget that pretty much every kid in america, at one point, has helped a little Italian Painter work his way through a maze in search of coins. and these same pople whining about the Indian's logo probably bought a nintendo for their kid on X-mas
