View Full Version : Jigging question/rod length?

I have had this question in my head for some time now, nothing too vexing but it is to me.

If one rod is 7' and the other is 6', if I jig each one up and down, will the 7' rod's jig move further up and down than the 6' rod that is swept the same amount?, or will they be the same.

If the angle you create by moving your hands is the same for both rod lengths, the 7 foot rod will move the jig more. If you make a 30 degree angle, the tip of the 7 foot rod will move about 6 inches more.

OK, I'll put my pocket protector away now...

this may be a little too technical for my pea brain but would you not also have to figure in the action of the rod as well?

You have to compare the lengths of the rods from the tip to the reel seat, or where-ever you hold the rod.

yes... and i i was going to mention that- a stiff 6 footer could possibly make the jig go up and down further than a softer 7 footer.

Variables are for the weak :bshake:

Good points both. Umm, I was thinking xtra fast action heavy fly rods?

I have 2 rods, one is 7' and the other is 8' and the reel seats are in the same place on the rods and the action is the same, from what I gather, the 8' rod will move my jig a little more in the water column if I jig them both the same way. If so, I will be using the longer rod for my jigging.

Is it that obvious? :eek5:

I do a lot of work with engineers... I guess it becomes obvious to me! :D

Sometimes subtle jigging gets more fish, but you have more options with the longer rod.
