BigFish 11-14-2007, 10:03 PM Oh boy. That is a shame.:(
shadow 11-14-2007, 10:10 PM just saw this on the news myself.scary thing is it can happen to anyone.
JohnR 11-14-2007, 10:19 PM Deephole? Carpenters? Where on the news?
JohnR 11-14-2007, 11:12 PM My wife said that they released a name of Paul Martin, from Longmeadow, Mass. That name rings a bell but I'm not sure if it is from fishing or something else
T&P to this anglers friends and family.
In The Surf 11-14-2007, 11:16 PM Just reported on the 11:00 news.
Surfcaster Paul Martin of Longmeadow, MA drowned at Deep Hole/Carpenters Bar this evening. A fellow surfcaster saw/heard him in distress and called for help. It took the coast guard/search and rescue approximately an hour and a half to recover the body located several feet off shore and around 100 yards from where he was last seen.
Not the best spot to fish alone especially if you are unfamiliar with the area.
Be careful out there!
Skitterpop 11-14-2007, 11:41 PM May God be with you Paul.
RIP
Gunpowder 11-14-2007, 11:44 PM keepin him in my prayers
spence 11-15-2007, 12:08 AM I remember once wading out at Deep Hole and getting my feet all tangled in a bunch of fishing line under water that just about dunked me.
What a shame. My thoughts for his family.

Clammer 11-15-2007, 12:22 AM RIP ><><>
BassDawg 11-15-2007, 05:35 AM Verrrry sad, and unfortunate!
My family's thoughts and prayers will go out to him and his.
We can, ALL, never be too careful. got baptized a coupla times meself this year through mnissteps and rogue waveage.
No Trophy is worth our lives and how that loss would effect our loved ones. I always try to have a viable exit stategy, and try not to position myself so precariously that if and when something freaky does happen me noggin doesn't get bashed in, or there isn't a safe place to swim to.
Deep hole is no bargain under the wrong conditions, seems docile and can be somewhat hypnotic..........................
Rest in Peace, Paul, and God's Speed for you and His Peace and Comfort for your family.
STREETFIGHT 11-15-2007, 06:50 AM rip paul
EricM 11-15-2007, 07:13 AM Oh no
Rick Ackley 11-15-2007, 07:34 AM Alone at Deep Hole, terrible, and from my neck of the woods, about 2 towns away. RIP Paul, may God bless you and your family.
Brother Brian 11-15-2007, 07:35 AM Bummer . Condolences to his family.
Rappin Mikey 11-15-2007, 07:50 AM Geeze. He was from my neck of the woods. RIP, and prayers to the family.
I was thinking about this, many say that hazard ave and beavertail are so dangerous, but I always feel safer at those places over places like deep hole- deep wading on bowling ball sized rocks with a sweeping current can be sketchy if you are not careful.
Odizza 11-15-2007, 07:52 AM SO SAD TO SEE SOMEONE LOST.. THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Andy D 11-15-2007, 07:56 AM Condolences to his family ! R.I.P Paul
Thoughts and prayers sent. A real eye opener......:(
fishpoopoo 11-15-2007, 08:16 AM T&P to the man's family.
One reason why I try to get some swimming in during the off-season.
joeangler 11-15-2007, 08:24 AM just heard it on the news should wore his korkers and fish with a buddy safety first
BassDawg 11-15-2007, 08:32 AM Agreed, Nebe.............
Never felt that Hazard and The Tail are nearly as dangerous as say working the mouth of the Narrow and DH. What's illusive about DH and Carpenter's is that both spots present themselves as doable and more docile than they actually are.
In other words, at first glance they appear to be "easy", whereas with names like Hazard and the very nature of the rocks at The Tail your guard and senses are already "UP", so to speak. It's the sneaky rip, rogue wave, hidden pocket/bowl while wading that often places us in harm's way.
We can NEVER take too many precautions and it doesn't hurt to feesh with a partner, or in lieu of a partner in places like the aforementioned spots a PFD is a MUST when going solo. Just my thoughts................
1dozenraw 11-15-2007, 08:40 AM Thoughts go out to him and his family/friends.
For those of us that do not wade all that often, could some one shed a little light how this occurs and what you do to minimize the risks. Is it more often than not the inability to stand up once dunked? Now I am not a complete newbie, wader belts, avoid going solo, knowing hte area, etc., but as I expand my horizons from the rock points of the Northshore I would like to tap into the experience of those that have been there and done that.
Just a thought. You might want to start a new thread so that we can just focus on the loss here. My concern is that we might assume that he was doing something wrong when that might not be at all true. Seems like almost every year someone dies doing what we do. Sobering thought... again condolences. Bad things happen to good people and bad things usually happen fast when you do what we do.
Bill L 11-15-2007, 08:49 AM Despite what has been said above, it is not really a dangerous place to fish. There is no real "drop off ", and the currents are not that strong where you can get "swept" away (excluding hurricane surf). While the footing is tricky, you can usually just get back up if you take a spill. I am guessing there was some physical issue (heart attack, etc) involved, unless he really pushed the wading envelope and tried to swim to some fish
RIJIMMY 11-15-2007, 08:49 AM very sad and an area near and dear to my heart. I fished those areas 1000 times and never thought it was dangerous. My thoughts and prayers to his family and another warning to all of us!
The Iceman 6 11-15-2007, 08:50 AM RIP, thoughts and prayers to family and friends.....
slow eddie 11-15-2007, 08:51 AM it was not that rough out last nite. was fishing the bar with no problems at all.
perhaps it was another factor involved in the poor man's demise. hate to lose another. thoughts do go out to his family.

The search for a missing fisherman in South Kingstown comes to an end. We now know the man who was somehow swept out to sea has died.
The 59 year old victim was in the water for about 45 minutes before rescue crews were able to find him. He was about 30 yards off shore.
The call came into South Kingstown Police around 6:30 last night- Fisherman in distress off Deep Hole in Matunick.
The search was intense, after 45 minutes, a man identified as Paul Martin of Longmeadow, Massachusetts was pulled into shore. He was rushed to South County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police tell us Martin was wearing waders in the water while fishing, and somehow got swept out.
Jack Linton is a fisherman who says he didn't know the victim, but he knows how scary the water can be. He's been in a similar situation, when the tide takes you out, you feel helpless!
Linton: "What happens is once the waders fill up your feet go up, then you get into trouble."
We're told another fisherman in the area made the call to 911- but Martin, the victim was fishing alone.

Bill L 11-15-2007, 08:57 AM Regardless of circumstances, it is sad and my condolences to his loved ones.
Hey Jim, when I heard on the news last night without a name, I also had some anxious moments wondering if it was someone I know. Good to see Eddy post too, he was one I was worried about...
ilovetwofish 11-15-2007, 09:19 AM RIP, thoughts and prayers to family and friends.
RIJIMMY 11-15-2007, 09:20 AM I just read another report and it said he "fell off a breakwater" ?
I wonder if he was climbing along the wall in the back or perhaps over by East Matunuck beach near the rockpile?
Rob Rockcrawler 11-15-2007, 09:25 AM Thoughts and prayers to his family. RIP
AT Grimaldi 11-15-2007, 09:28 AM Very sad. My sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.
Years ago, a small crew of us used to fly fish the mouth of the Merrimack in Newburyport. The bottom is very fluid sand. Orvis used to make these manually inflatable PFD that had pockets for 4 large fly boxes. It was as standard gear as my waders. I have to admit, we put ourselves in some pretty dangerous circumstances. Eventually we stopped wearing the PFDs. That was our mistake. I am by no means even suggesting that this man made any mistakes. Just sharing my own experience.
Next time I don the waders, I shall revisit my korker studs and my PFD - especially on the breachways. A few surge waves into those rocks, even with others right there, could be VERY dangerous.
Rest In Peace Paul Martin.

Saltheart 11-15-2007, 09:31 AM Too sad. out for a good time and never comes home. :(
Every spot has something that could potentially get you. i think at deep hole its these roll around boulders that make it very hard to get firm footing. bumped by a wave , you have a hard time finding a spot to get you feet down firmly. Alos , if it was way out where the waves break at that extreme east bar at Deep Hole , you must be about 200 yards out sometimes. That's a long way back in if something does go wrong.

RIP....sorry to hear that.

I could see that in a situation like this, some might choose to "salute" someone like that by getting back into the suds, others might choose to call it a night...
We should move specific discussion on safety at DH and the bars to another thread...
piemma 11-15-2007, 10:05 AM very sad and an area near and dear to my heart. I fished those areas 1000 times and never thought it was dangerous. My thoughts and prayers to his family and another warning to all of us!
Same here Jim. Deep Hole and Carpenters were my go to spots when I was a member of the Club on the same road. Always fished both spots alone in the middle of the night. You need to be aware of where the drop off is and you must where Korkers.
Thoughts and prayers from my family.....
Saltheart 11-15-2007, 10:34 AM Last report I read said he fell off the wall.
Matunuck and Carpenters are pretty safe spots, if it starts to get deep, that means you are off the bar.
Unlike Hazard or Beavertail - spots that conspire to killl fishermen - at Matunuck, you have to get very unlucky or be stricken.

BigFish 11-15-2007, 12:57 PM Any spot you fish should always be thought of as dangerous...no matter how "safe" you might think it is......anything can happen at any time! Accidents can and do happen even in the safest of circumstances!
RIROCKHOUND 11-15-2007, 03:08 PM It's a damn shame. My wifes friend did CPR on him last night when they foiund him. I already got the 'you be careful speach' this morning...
Saltheart, If thats the case, and he fell off the wall by the trailer park, it's a different story. Unless he had a heart attack or panic attack, and hyperventilated him self out, I am having a hard time figuring this one out. Like Jim and others have said, I have never felt unsafe there, EVEN in seriously big swells, even before I wore a wetsuit. You might get tossed, but properly suited up you should be able to eventually get your feet under you!
My other thought; if it was on the bar, and the other guy went for help, did he do so b/c he was unable to help him? I know PIemma and I have walked by guys at that spot and others to check on them. We even went to check on a guy who put his boat up on that bar one night, AND checked up on a pink fender ball that we thought was a fat guy floundering in the surf in Narragansett... Make sure we keep on an eye on eachother out there!

The story is in the ProJo. Any number of things could have happend to Mr. Martin, only he will know. No use speculating.

Headhunter 11-15-2007, 08:56 PM My condloences to his family and friends. It is a sad day when this happens. Every few years it seems some one dies usually in the treacherous cliffs and rocky shores of Narragansett. It is alwyays on my mind every hour I spend there alone at night, even more so when my sons are with me. Immersion research dry top with waders or wet suit. You can swim in waders with it ,altough i do not make a practice of it nor would I advise any one to do so. Carry a knife(bench made h1 steel) my choice. Most of all be aware of your surroundings at all times. I dont know if this is appropriate here just some thaughts.
Sledgematic 11-16-2007, 10:44 AM Though I don't know him, I am trying to get Paul Martin's address so I (and others interested) can send condolences or a contribution to his family. Called a church (couldn't help me) in the town and also left a message with the Longmeadow (MA) P.D.
