nice little game of hard ball by the sox, not caving to fans desires and properly evaluating the market - they seam to be pretty good at that, an important thing in this market

Not evaluating the market.....evaluating the talent! The market wanted to give him between 55-60 million dollars over 4 years! He must really like it here......or he realized Fenway Park caters to his swing and style of hitting! It adds homers and rbi's to his stats!:rtfm:Still....sweet contract and staying with a contender instead of toiling with an also-ran!

It's nice to see that Boston has become a desired destination for many star athletes these days. I keep telling my kids to enjoy this period with the Sox, Pats, Celts, Revs, BC, and hopefully the Bruins. I don't recall any city having its teams on a roll like this in the same year.

Good job by the Sox holding the line. Today was the deadline, sign or were moving on.
I doubt he left millions on the table to stay in Boston, but I am glad he is staying :btu:

:)The market didn't want to give him 55-60 million, the media did. Controversy sells newspapers and ad spots on NESN. Still a nice chunck of change for the guy:walk:

yup, evaluating what teams are gonna offer what and how attractive those cities are is part of evaluating the market. as far as I know, the only team that offered anywhere close to 4 years at 55-60 was the phillies. i'd take less money not to live and play in philly, wouldn't just about anyone. most of the 4 at 60 talk came from the media, and most of that was probably put out by his agent. if he had received an attractive offer in that range (angels, etc), he'd probably be there now. also, having the balls to say 'if another team wants to overpay, they can have him' and not caving to the fans was big. i think they got him for about what he's worth and for a term that he should be productive over.

i think he'll be good for at least for another 3 years regardless of the age factor that was in the media so much.
