Do the Bass still take eels, or is it critical to match the bait. Everywhere I look there is mention of the fish feeding on pogies. It's great to see them back in numbers, but does it reduce the surfcasters ability to hook up on eels?

In your experience what is more effective, drifting eels or drifting pogies or pogie heads?

Eels are universal for bigger fish. Fish Eels...

Sometimes they will be on something else but overall it is still a major go to...

Think of an eel as the striped bass equivalent of your favorite food - I could be full, but if someone offered me a piece of cheesecake I would usually say yes. :p
The main advantage of eels is castability and logistical ease. You don't need a live well, and they stay on the hook.
However, the last two seventy pound fish I heard of in these parts fell to menhaden heads fished inside harbors.
The short answer is that they are both excellent.

Pogies are great during the day..around Boston the larger fish have not been hitting them at night for a few years.....a lot of the talk regarding pogies all over is of the peanuts in the 1-4 inch size

I agree with ClmDgr eels at night pogies during the day...I prefer to put out a chum slick and free drift the pogie chunks rather than strit drift

One more thing...a little politically incorrect...troll small hous pets to get the larger of the wild dogs

Thanks for the tip Patrick, all along I thought ferrets were only good for bluefish.
