I'm a bit of a newbie and fish in a rather unique location (or so I think). I am located real close to a large hydro-electric power plant which I have heard people fish all year round. I fish the warm water outflow of the plant, which has a rather strong current, (when using bunker chunks or bluefish pieces, I use a 4 oz. weight or so to get the bait down to the bottom and let it drift) I just started fishing at this spot and have been successful in April with sandworms picking up schoolies, and from July to August I do well with plastic bombers, storm plastic shad, and of course drifting chunks, which I usually do because of all of the bluefish. I would normally go down to this spot and ask one of the friendly guys down there for some tips, or my local tackle shop, but unfortunately I haven't been fishing since August because I've been studying in Cairo Egypt. My family is looking to get some gifts for me when I return for xmas on the 23rd of December. Any recommendations for this type of fishing will be appreciated for both bait and lures/jigs. BUT /not always slow & not always directly in the discharge ;;

have differnt weight heads & size rubber / But normally big isn,t always best ;;

trying different things / & in a discharge its similiar to regular fishing .in the fact that the fish will move in & out depending on force of the discharge ;;& bait /water temp/ water salt level ;;

you can make this as simple or involved as you do the same the rest of the year ;;

I've been away from my old stomping ground a long time. Is LIPA what we used to call LILCO? Saw some decent fish taken there, but I was hesitant to take any, not knowing if there was anything in that warm water that might make me glow if I ate a fish from. But that was 30 some odd tears ago. Smarter minds than I have will recommend what to use, I just wanted to say welcome, LI Guy.

I'd run several different weight jig heads with different size shad / cocahoe / grub bodies or storms. The different size jogs will allow you to switch and work different parts of the outflow. How wide is the outflow? Something you can cast across? At times you will need to experiment to find where/depth in the outflow they are...

I can easily cast across the outflow and it seems as if some others are familiar with this spot! The only issue with using storm or tsunami shads in the outflow itself is that I'm not sure if the lure is able to go down deep enough to reach the fish in some places, and it seems that many of the fish are quite small making me hesitant to use something greater then 5 inches. . .I'm certainly new at this, so what I just typed might not make any sense. I usually use shad bodies on the wider part of the outflow during the spring as I cast it into shallower water and retrieve it across the deeper channel that is cut. I'm typing "cocohoe" into google right now to figure out what it is. Thanks for all of those that responded!

I agree with the "low and slow".I drag a small plastic acroos the bottom,with a lot of success.Obviously,if it's not working,try something else.
Myself,I would advise against using bait,especially since you said there are a lot of small fish.I'd rather get the skunk,than kill some schoolies.

That's the spot. As others have advised, rubber on small leadheads, small bucktails and my personal favorite, Bombers in the 15A size, fished very s-l-o-w-l-y. Don't forget to dress for the season and be careful walking out there.

Try having someone in your family head over to Campsite Sporting Goods in Huntington (on 110) and speak with Crazy Al. If he can't steer them in the right direction with some good advice, no one can. Just be careful fishing Northport, cause if you take a dunking, it's a long walk back and you might be hypothermic by the time you get back to your car (I'm speaking from experience on this one).

If any of you ever get a chance, fly down to Aswan in Upper Egypt and fish lake Nasser. It holds some of the largest freshwater fish in the world, ever heard of Nile Perch? It also has tiger bass and giant vundu catfish. . .it's the only place I would fish in Egypt. The red/med sea also have some fishing, but nothing (from what I've heard) compared to the fishing in lake Nasser. (It is huge and was created by the Aswan High Dam) Type it into google.
