I need some advice. I have a near-new Penn Surf Master Model 200 bait casting reel and a Penn Squidder Model 146 reel (both recently factory serviced by Penn) but I cannot take apart the reels to change spools after loosening and releasing the spring loaded pin on the right side of the spool. I've been salt water fishing for more then 20 years and I thought I knew my way around a bait casting reel but I cannot pull apart these two reels I'm afraid I'll damage the reels if I use a tool to pry the reels apart. Anybody have experience with vintage Penn "take apart" reels? Thanks.

Bill,
Try tightening the drag and engage the anti reverse lever before you back off on the spring loaded screw. This will allow you to simultaneously put a little extra torque on the reel handle along with the side plate as you are turn the side plate counterclockwise to remove it. The little extra help from the engaged handle usually makes the difference. (Make sure you are holding the spring loaded screw out as you are turning the side plate and handle counterclockwise)

Do not use tools to pry apart the reel.

Thanks! It worked. I was turning the reel's right side plate clockwise, instead of counter clockwise.
