Yes, I told him today I was going to just go to Miriam...I hate Kent, they have no clue what they are doing, after 5 Clots its time for a second opinion , This is nothing to fool with, at worst it will kill you and with all this numbness in the leg for a couple months now, there is really some permanent tissue damage done..A loss of a limb is a possibility also, Kent is the worst hospital in the state...But he insisted..

Steve has been walking with a cane as of late and has not fished at all.Anyway, I will be there for him and keep everyone posted..

Samuel Z. Goldhaber, MD, Cardiovascular Division, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, 75 Francis St, Boston, MA 02115. E-mail sgoldhaber@partners.org

I posted this before. Its time for him to seek the best available treatment before things go too far. These people are like the #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& and Stevey van Stahl of medicine :) . They will have a whole team of the best in the world looking at his case.

And I agree, Miriam & RI Hospital are the only places I'd go in RI with a serious medical issue.

Apreciate it guys, Look, Steve and I are close but I will say he is extrememly stubborn ! The more I tell him to seek a second opinion or look elseware, the more upset he gets, I and everyone else can only say it so much...I just hope this isnt a lesson learned with tragic results...Yes Steve is on coumadin but it isnt helping for some reason he keeps forming deadly clots...I really wish he would see someone else but in the end it isnt up to me...So all I can do is pass it all along..Even his mother cannot get though to him on this, we have all tried..

I agree wholeheartedly. WE just had a bout of clots with my grandfather. (He is 88) He has been on Coumadin for approx 50 years. So when it was found out to be a clot in his leg the doctors at Brockton Hospital were dumbfounded. His hemotoligist was called in.

. His red blood cell count is too high due to a blood disorder. ( a form of cancer that attacks the bone marrow) The bone marrow is making his body produce extra red blood cells (I don't remember the technical term) For now we have him on a daily injection of lovinox (?) and hydroxyurea (sp?). In addition we have to take him once a week to be bled.

I guess the point I am trying to make is a second opinion sounds like it is needed. Something is wrong and needs to be addressed. Being stubborn could have bad consequences. I hope it doesn't and wish him well.

Sorry to hear about the reoccurence of the clots.

He will be in our thoughts and prayers. My first prayer will be that his heart is moved to seek a second opinion. I'll also pray that this Doc at Kent has a brainstorm or admits defeat and sends/advises him to seek help in Boston.

Let's hope for the best and that his condition improves drastically.
Great guy, and unfortunate that his stubborness/loyalty is prolly what makes him such a good friend and a great surfcaster..................

Well at this point, I have to say I am deeply concerned...Steves foot looks well, bad..It has not had blood flow for a long time....I spoke with his daughter and mother last night at length...I am going there at 11am and I am going to try to purswade him the best I can to get the hell out of there and see someone else! I think the foot stuff is permanent at this point, They found two more clots last night, this makes around 6 so far...one of these could have broke off and went to his lung or brain..I just think its russian roulette , third time in kent and no improvement its time to see a different doctor...That cancer thought really scares me and is a possibility according to his family..This is just awefull especially at this time of year..So please everyone pray that he decides to go someplace else asap. Man what a horrible year very depressing, Along with all this I have to have surgery very soon...I just hope I know how to convey what I want to in a way that does not upset him. Ok well, thats that..

People don't come from around the world to go to Kent. They go to the Brigham. I lost a good friend two years ago to cancer because he wouldn't go to Boston -Instead he stayed in New Bedford at St Lukes.
Please tell him if he loves his family he'll go to Boston -sorry it may sound harsh but he's a smart guy, this Doc hasn't done to well yet.

Please send Steve condolances from the entire Bomba family.
If he needs any medical advice, please pm me, or Mikey or DadBomba.
We've got lots of mediacal know how in the direct loop, along with some near misses that led to great saves within the family and professionally as well.
There's lots of doctors in the Bombardier loop that would be sure to either see Steve or give hime some great advice at a moment's notice.

Later,

If hospitals were fishing spots, staying at kent right now would be like staying put at your favorite spot that your confident in, even though you know guys are bangin em a few miles down the road.. You wont leave because you dont know that other spot too well.. Steve I know you would move to that other spot. i know you would. Come on steve.. pack up the plug bag, and move on to the next spot before you loose the tide and the bass move on... You can read the water and you'll know where to cast ;)

#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& - I'm a pharma rep and I can tell you for certain that the medical care at Kent really is second rate. They just don't attract or keep the better medical talent. They are fine and competent for the run of the mill stuff, but anything outside of the norms, and he really needs to go elsewhere.
Medicine is like anything else - when the facilities and the pay suck -- you're just not going to get the talent -- and Kent doesn't have either.
I hate to say it, but this is probably most evident in their Cardiology DPT -- I know your telling him this stuff already, but maybe if he sees enough messages telling him to move his butt, it will register.

Good luck Steve.

get him to boston, beth isreal or brigham, whatever it takes. my wife's mother refused to go to boston for cancer care (stuck with a local hospital) and my wife will regret not forcing her to go to boston forever. we're lucky enough to have some of the best hospitals and doctors in the world right here, gotta take advantage.

#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&, my wife's a cardiac intensive care nurse at Beth Isreal. PM me if you want any specifics on what a hospital with more "tools" could offer that they can't were he is. I'll ask her to write something up. Maybe more convincing than coming from a bunch of fisherman. Some of the stories she tells me about the diagnosis that patients get from some of the local hospitals around here before they end up at BI are scary.

Saw Steve yesterday and the two clots have now broken up but he is still in the ICU...The prblem is that they are not telling him why this is going on, thats what needs to be figured out...Anyway I really laid into him about getting another opinion and how important that is..He did agree that he would, abviously he isnt going to do that right now but when he is released he swears to me he will seek out another opinion, He knows that this is dangerous and said to me that its hard to live knowing something that can kill you keeps forming in his body...So thats the update, I stop in and visit with him daily so I will keep you posted and thanks for the great advice, I have relayed all of it to him!

Good work, Bill. Getting him to say tha is a major step in the right direction. And good for Steve to agree to it too. It obviously has been difficult for him as well.:claps:

Brings up another thought... Is his PCP (primary care physician involved at this stage? Or is he solely in the hands of the local specialist? The specialist might be reluctant to pass him off.......
