what are you guys using for large siwash hooks now (7/0 and 8/0)

options seem to be VMC 9170PS (closed eye), mustad M9510XXXDT (duratin) and gami

i tend to trust VMC over Mustad, but was just wondering what you guys have found. I would assume that the mustads are more corrosion resistant.

Don't leave out the option of the VMC O'Shaughnessy Hooks, they are a little easier to pop into place for the rear hook because the eye is markedly smaller. Then use the Siwash up front because the bigger eye allows for more movement, as well as the extra weight that can help lead the way when the eel is allowed to sink.

got large barbless stainless from the surfcaster.

I use Mustad Siwash 3x (Tinned) 9510 size 8/0 or 9/0. They are very strong and heavy and withstand rusting well - even when placed in brine. What ever hook you use make sure it's heavy. Heavy is very important to keep your riggies "keeled".

I once read a post from Al B. where he said the best hook was the XX version of the Mustad, which I have never been able to find. I guess there was a limited run at one time.

I don't like the Gamis because they rust. I've actually had them rust during a fishing trip. They're also very soft - the easiest open eye to close.

Which leaves the Mustad XXX for me. The 7/0 is actually not to thick, but I use 9/0 for rigged eels and they are made from extremely heavy wire. I think it's safe to say they aren't going to break over a striped bass.

Check out the Owner Stinger Siwash Hook. Expensive, but perhaps the best hook option. Scary sharp, black coating is very rust resistant and super strong. But they cost about $8 for 3 or 4 hooks.

I have two startegies for the hooks on rigged eel. One is the super sharp , thin wire that grabs anything that touches it and sinks in deep. With this Hook (4/0 Laser sharp) if the bass even looks at it he's hooked. Obvious problem is it could be starightened but i have not seen it happen. You get more Hook ups with these thin sharp hooks though. many times the fish is foul hooked bumping the eel.

The second is the boat anchor size mustad 94150. If you do hook up , you should not lose a fish on that hook. the problem with this is the bass pretty much has to eat the eel. If he just wacks it , the hook ups are far fewer than with the smaller , sharper hooks.

i have been leaning more towards big Mustad hooks for both rigged and live eels. I guess i'm leaning towards brute force as i get older. I guess the best bet would be to have a few of each. start with the big Hooks and if you feels bumps but are not hooking up , try the thin wire hooks.
