View Full Version : Traditions:
ThrowingTimber 12-22-2007, 11:47 AM I'm lucky that I have both my parents still with me. Around this time of the year all my family gets together and the men in the family make buñuelos (like an oversized fried cheese ball) and Natilla (a custard). Its funny beacause as long as I can remember my old man and my uncles pick a day and plan the whole thing, theres always dinner and dancing and shots, lots of shots but I dont think this time of year would be the same for me without this tradition. Anyone else have any traditions?
I like the feats of strength and the airing of the grievances.
piemma 12-22-2007, 12:04 PM For about 30 years everyone (60+ people) comes to my house Christmas Day. I have 15 acres and a pond so, weather permitting, there is skating, hockey, drinking, lots of food and at dusk a gigantic bonfire that I build all year. This year, with over 2 feet of snow on the ground in Burrillville RI, it will be no problem to light it up.
Merry Christmas to everyone

The Iceman 6 12-22-2007, 07:40 PM Every year on Xmas eve my parents throw a party for friends and family, home made food & catered food, plus plenty of drinks, the scotch usually comes out. The old man has been doing this since 1946. Every year after too much scotch, my older brother and I head outstide and take a light bulb (I'm talking the big colored bulbs) off a decorated tree or the banister and throw it into the street just to hear that POP. We've been doing this since we were kids. We'll after several years, Hesh2 was onto our little game, but we still do it, we're 38 and 40 respectively, the lecture we got 2 years ago, let's just say the conversation went something like this "Grow ******* up, you ******* idiots, I can't wait to go to your ******* house, to think you're both ******* married with ******* kids, go ******* sweep that up, you ******* morons , the glass is in my ******* driveway." Looks like that tradition won't be carried on.....

BassDawg 12-23-2007, 06:35 AM Christmas Eve with my wife and her family, Chinese Take Out, then they open all of their presents on The Eve. I think it's a NShore thang. Long lines at Kowloon's that night............
My family always opened just one gift on Cristmas Eve, and it had to be approved by Mom and Dad. Like yer not opening the Big One until Christmas.....................
Gag gifts, one or two in the stocking......................and then there is the BIG WOW!
My family used to get together at our Lake House in Oklahoma with as many relatives as could make it, over 300 acres, lots of shoreline, and my Mom's Australian Egg Nog Recipe. That sheet would knock yer dink in the durt if you weren't careful and was always kept outside in a 5 gallon keg ~with ladle :heybaby:
I'll never forget being sent to the porch to get some more wood for the living room fire one chilly Xmas morning. Pretty sure I was 9 ('69) only to find three shiny new Schwinns ~my "Lemon Peeler", my brother's "Orange Crate", and my sister's "Apple Dumpling" (??, the green one). Man!! What a thrill that was.
So now, my 4yo daughter has to go outside and see what Santa's sleigh may or may not have dropped from the clouds (my wife's spin) in our big evergreen bushes outside the apt building. She knows that Santa is not real, but we still have fun with the whole concept of the sleigh, Rudolph, and the North Pole story. It's usually the one present that's too awkward/big to wrap, or the one that is the Grand Finale :bl: :bl:

The Iceman 6 12-25-2007, 08:31 AM Bonfire @ Pienna's house tonight, I'll bring my skates...
RickBomba 12-25-2007, 08:42 AM My Xmas is hectic.
Usually work during the day on Xmas Eve, then out to Granby for Naked Xmas with the rents and cousins, then back to Waltham to open presents with my girl. After that, drink champagne, pass out (tired) and sleep for a couple of hours. Now I'm awake.
Next, get all my sheet ready for fancy breakfast at my inlaw's house (usually crabcake benedict with asparagus), exchange gifts with that side of the family, then come home, clean the house, start cooking again and get ready for the party here tonight.
Clean the house inbetween, cook, cook, and more cook, thej hang out with friends until I have to put the Ipod on around midnight and go to bed because I have to be in Eastie to work at 8:30 tomorrow morning.
I think after doing this every year for the last five years, I might downsize next year.
OK I'm out,
Rick

Adam_777 12-25-2007, 10:03 AM Used to be a great time of year when my family wasn't at all out war.Now there's no big party on my side of the family. My girls side has a little get together which consists of me drinking massive amounts of alcohol and trying to stomach bad food while arguing with inlaws.
