Woke up Sunday - no heat in the house.. Checked everything, got a guy to come out. $90 later, he relit the pilot... BUT, it brought our attention to something else.

A safety valve of some sort on my gas furnace must have exploded recently. We looked inside where the pilot tubes were and one of them looked like it burst, and was basically dripping molten metal down to the bottom of the pan which sits about 1/2" from wood. Not a good situation.

Its a crappy old magic chef furnace that should of never been installed in the first place and has long since been discontinued.

So.. this morning.. coldest day of the year, my furnace is being replaced. My wife just called and when they looked at it, he said it was WAY hot and the house probably would of burnt down if we waited another day.

There's another $2600 I wasnt expecting....But could of been MUCH Worse.
Ah the joys of owning a home.

money comes an goes, you're a lucky man to have this problem caught.

check with your gas provider about rebates for a new furnace, I haven't done the research yet,but I believe there's up to $500 available but you've got to peel away the red tape to find it. there's also tax write offs.

For some reason I remember something similar when we replaced ours a few years ago. But it may need to be an EnergyStar compliant device to qualify.

Rebate eh?
Its the cheap model - goodman? I think, but ill have to look into that.

and beleive me, I know someone was looking out for me this time. I actually hearing a loud BANG like a month ago. (The furnace is literally right above my bedroom... ) I looked around and didnt see anything... Could of been ALOT worse.

The guy who installed it say he thought we might be running at less than 50% efficiency... My next bill will be interesting to see.. :)
